10 Acoustic Songs that Will Inspire You

As a guitar player for more than ten years, I’m always looking for new songs, and often more inspiration to continually push myself to become a better acoustic guitar player. Sometimes I think acoustic guitarists have a bad rap for being boring or less technically capable then electric guitarists. Guitars acoustic-guitars”>acoustic guitars list to move and awe you. They are not all of one type and there are some more technically challenging than others, but one thing for sure is all rock, and that is the inspiration of the acoustic guitar.

Ed Robertson put together a series called “The Bathroom Sessions” a series of lines mostly just for him and the acoustic guitar. It just goes to show that there are some really talented songwriters and guitarists among the pop groups today. Even with all the electric stuff stripped away, Ed is incredible acoustically, perhaps more so than with the band. If you don’t want to listen to the whole thing, at least people check it out after 1:05, it’s very serious.

Andy McKee – Drifting

Just try to make your jaw drop, I dare you. Andy McKee is an incredible guitarist and so are most people who play this style. Other guitarists who are participating in the Fingerstyle Guitar Competition are definitely worth checking out here http://www.canadianguitarfestival.com/ Another one of my favorites is Antione Dufour. Although they are all awesome and impressive, I chose this song to represent this genre on this list because it was one of the first I heard and it still remains one of my favorites.

Sharon Wayne – Albeniz

Sharon Wayne exhibits insane technical prowess. He is defiantly a master of the acoustic guitar. This is the very emotional piece that is most important.

Leo Kottke – Deep River Blues

While we were listening to Pandora one day I came across a live version of “Sweet Motion” by Leon Kottke, which you can listen to here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVFzLgXEctU It is simply incredible. He is a phenomenal player and his work with the acoustic twelve strings and when he slides is a heck of a thing to see.

Bayside- Montauk

This is an incredible rock song. After the unfortunate accident that caused the death of their drummer, Bayside did a short tour that was entirely acoustic. You can listen to Montauk’s full electric version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP_KQ_2woIg&feature;= related if you want, but I find the acoustic guitar version extremely soulful and also shows an impressively inspiring artistry.

John Mayer – Gravity (VHO Sessions)

Despite John Mayer’s popularity on Top 40 radio and the likes of pop star hits and one-hit wonders, hit; It really is a phenomenal guitar with a technical background that is very sound. His music is heavily influenced by the blues which sounds great in acoustic shows. There are quite a few that you can watch on YouTube but “Gravity” is one of my favorites.

Radiohead – Wrong

Although Thom Yorke often uses effects and musical elementselectronic, he does not use them at all for mixing. Radiohead sounds great acoustic and “I’d Be Wrong” is one heck of a sassy example.

Dave Matthews Tim Reynolds – Jimi Res

Even if you’re not a huge Dave Matthews fan, you can still appreciate his technical ability. Along with his peers, Tim Reynolds creates an explosion of acoustic terror that cannot be denied.

John Butler Trio – Ocean

This is a very beautiful acoustic song. John Butler is from Australia and the rest of his music is lively and amazing. If nothing else, though, this twelve-string acoustic instrumental piece will blow your mind and fill your heart.

Obadiah Parker – Hey Ya

I added this song to the list because I think it’s a great example of a song that wasn’t originally acoustic but sounds incredible as an acoustic song. With this song there are now many acoustic covers and rap music on the web.
