These films have been depicting dysfunctional families for decades. Some are very sad, others are really weird. There are groups of movies to watch once, making your family troubles seem like nothing. Some do not remember sleeping titles. These movies are entertaining and not to be missed.
Requiem Dream (2000) This movie stars Ellen Burstyn like you’ve never seen her before. Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly also star in this movie. It could have something to do with the title not being as popular as it should have been. One of the greats in portraying the modern day life of substance abusers. This movie portrays a dysfunctional family and drug abuse. He takes us on the journey of men slowly unfolding as they go down this road. This is a traditional age of drug abuse, and not so traditional. The only thing this mother and son have in common is that they are not aware of each other’s condition. Everyone needs a school.
Ice Storm (1997) This movie stars Kevin Klein, Joan Allen and Sigourney Weaver. Dysfunctional families of the 70s. This movie paid homage to the 70s without missing any detail in the setting, clothing and way of thinking of the decade. Upper middle class families in suburban Connecticut sharing friendships, wives and heartbreaks. A very realistic look at homes this time. This movie was not a blockbuster, although it should have been.
Chumscrubber – (2005) – Glenn Close and John They were heard in this movie, though they play more of an actor’s role. Most of them were not big names, but great work, none the less. If the title had been something other than Chumscrubber, it might have done much better at the box office. Chumscrubber sounds like a science fiction movie, which is far from them. This is a movie. It’s basically a cluster of dysfunctional families in the suburbs. This movie conveys the real sadness that life can offer when most people are bent on it. This movie is good, but the reviews are mixed. One of those movies that you absolutely either loved or hated.
Ordinary People (1980) This movie stars Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore. Also stand very young Timothy Hoton as his son. This film encapsulates the dysfunctions of this family by looking at depression and suicide attempts and denial. This was one of the first realistic films to tackle those issues in depth. There are people, and unfortunately they are not alone. This is a sad picture of a family in crisis and we watch as they continue down this path. The best movie.
The Royal Tanenbaums (2001) This movie stars Gene Hackman, Angelica Huston, Gweneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Danny Glover, Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin, and more. Needless to say, this all-star cast does a bang-up job at portraying the dysfunctional American family at its best. It’s a strange and sometimes dark look into a real crazy family.
Buffalo 66 (1998) This movie by Christina Ricca and Vincent Gallo, who also directed this movie, shows a lot of dysfunction and then takes you home so you can see where seeds are planted here Ben Gazzaro and Angelica Huston are great as the family dinner hosts. Family dinners will never be the same after watching these parents. Big, small, and especially watch movies.
The Ref (1994) This movie starring Dennis Leary has nothing to do with sports as you might guess from the title. Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey are hilarious as the dysfunctional couple in this all-too-real family. This movie is comedy and one of the funniest movies of all. Watch and roar.
Goodfellas (1990) This movie stars Ray Liotta and Robert Di Nero and is one of the best movies depicting the mafia. Dad in and out of jail, helping mom get off a cocaine binge at the time, and uncles and aunts who are a bloody mess. One of the best movies ever made for many, but the theme of a dysfunctional family really shines through.
Grey Gardens (2009) This movie stars Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. Acting in the role of Drew Barrymore is something to be feared. This story is told about Jackie Kennedy’s relatives, her aunts and cousins, who have long since been forgotten. In the hey-day they were something, but later they live in squalor on the beautiful island of Long Hampton. With certain mental disorders on the table, these two women, mother and daughter, live a wonderful life a>. To recognize the role of Drew Barrymore, you must watch the documentary of the same name, made in 1975. This is a piece of history. Jackie Kennedy was mortified when the documentary came out to name her niece. In the end, he did something to help, as you will see in this movie. This movie keeps you entertained all the way through.
Harold and Matilda (1971) This movie stars Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort. This movie was very controversial at the time. It is a matter of religion, and it is to be avoided very much. It’s a great movie, although it’s pretty bland by today’s standards. Great movie.
