As a woman and a photographer, there are many things that men cannot do. Compared to a man, a woman in the bride’s changing room can make “getting ready” wedding photos more comfortable and less stressful for the bride. Female photographers offer a unique perspective and photographic eye.
These ten tips will help a new woman wedding photographer be more comfortable, productive, and happy at the end of a long day of shooting.
Tip 1) wear pants. Wearing a skirt is not a logical choice. Unless you’re only doing formal portraits, you’ll be up and down and running around. Tip 2) Wear all black. This includes hair ties, shoes, a purse and a walking around camera sling. This is important for photojournalism because you want to become as invisible as possible. Any other color, including white, will make you stand out more. Unless it’s a beach wedding or has another color requirement, a photographer in black will fade into the background at a typical wedding.
3) Blazer. Not only will it hide body imperfections (if you care about that), but it will give you plenty of useful pockets to keep in style, rectal cards, lens hoods etc. It will also hide any sweat. It’s a matter of business meeting men!
4) Do not wear anything lower cut. Synthesis is unprofessional and distracting. Either you are aware of the fall books, or someone else. In either way, the body that sank v. Basically all that people look at you instead of the bride is a huge no.
5) If you have long hair, wear it neatly tied back. No pigtails, no hats. It gives you a more professional look and won’t blow over your camera in a strong wind.
6 ) Comfortable shoes. I cannot stress this enough. Wearing high heels is potentially dangerous to you and others, not to mention the issue of heel comfort. Spiked stilettos have no place in a wedding photographer.
7) Do not wear ointment. You may be invisible to the eyes, but you must also be invisible to the nose.
8 ) For your gear bag, understand the washing pen/stain adds. These are filled with mild cleansers. One is feared, others are certainly known. 9) Also for your gear bag, check out the “Oil-Absorbing Skins” facial pack. Wearing a light powder is another idea to control oil on a bride or portrait subject, but it can cause breakouts or other problems. Plus, it’s a sanitation issue so many people use the same brush. The best bet is the sheets – so great because you can use one, nothing applies to their skin, and you can just throw it away.
10) Learn a few jokes. Short one-liners can make a fake group of people laugh. Use it while working with groups or paranymphs before the ceremony to help pay for pictures. Hold the G or PG! Know that while you are taking those silly family photos they can laugh. Real smiles are almost always better than fake ones.
