10 Coolest Free Android Apps

Last year, T-Mobile released the first smartphone with the new Android operating system for Google: the T-Mobile G1. The T-Mobile MyTouch is the newest Android device on the market. I’ve had the G1 album for the better part of a year. My husband and I chose the G1 over the iPhone, which has similar features, for several reasons: the cost of the phone, the cost of the data plan, and the availability of a free app. Every app listed here is free. I’m only ever for 2 apps and I don’t have too many cool ones. They are very cool and free.

All references below come from the Forum, unless otherwise stated.

Google Maps

Google Maps comes integrated with Android, so it doesn’t have it from the Market. Still in my top 10 coolest maps because of what it can do. It’s better than our GPS because not only can we find our way, but we can see around that road where it’s going. And it incorporates Street View. With Street View, you can pick a spot on the street and get a 360-degree image. I can see my house in Street View. I can see the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Sadly, I can’t yet see my beloved Prague on Street View. Kdy, Google, kdy?

LOLCats

If you love the Can Has Cheezburger site or the Fail Blog and sites like that, you’ll love LOLCats. LOLCats photos and videos are delivered right to your phone via an RSS feed. LOLCats, for those of you who missed them, are funny or adorable pictures of cats and kittens (and sometimes kittens) with hilarious captions There are also some like videos of cats doing something cool or funny. Play videos with YouTube. Yes, that comes with the G1.

Cats not your thing? Maybe you are a dog person. Well, the LOLCats app lets you LOL dogs. It also includes blogs DEFEAT, The Jammed Graph, The Kitchen Punts and I’m Stuck There. Just press the menu button and “Choose LOL” to pick your poison.

Abduction!

Rapture! perhaps the most addicting game on the G1 market. The premise? You are a cow. The rest of your crew has been rescued by an alien spaceship. The tractor beam that had grabbed them was also pulling chunks out of the ground. You will jump from block to block (by moving your G1) to climb into the sky and reach the UFO to save your flock.

You have points to go higher. You also get points when you collect parachuting cows. But not all users are good. Bombs in the upper ones will kill you. as gravity will. There are little gifts on the way. Touch it and open it. You could get an extra life that saves you if gravity or a bomb kills you. It can be High Jump so you can jump higher, or More Platforms to give you more chunks to land on. Or as just points. But even fewer Platforms or Crumble will be allowed. With Crumble, each piece destroys you on the ground so you can’t land again. Extra Life bonuses stay with you. Others last five seconds.

Easy enough level. The middle is a little harder. It is hard to say. Honestly, I still have UFO on Hard. But the infinite is beyond itself, and even the infinite is evil. It’s flattering, funny and interesting.

androidVNC

androidVNC allows me to connect to one of my home computers and control it remotely from my phone. If I’m at home, I can connect the G1 to my WiFi and reach any computer in my home via local IP addresses. This way I can also control my computer TV from my phone. If I’m out and about, I use the T-Mobile network to reach my external IP address, which is then forwarded from my router to some computer. Once in, I can pull out any of my computers though the VNC viewer on that computer and control it with my phone.

Lexic

Lexic is a simple game, but very challenging. You are gifted with several tiles and a border. You have to find as many words as you can in that term, using the letters only once, and they must touch each other. The longer the speech, the more valuable it is. I could never find all the words. After the time is up, you can see which words you missed. Sometimes those words you’ve never heard, other times you wish you didn’t see them.

FlyCast

FlyCast allows you to connect to radio stations internet stations. Select your favorite category or city to find stations. Or select Top posts to see the most popular posts. You can add your favorite posts to Favorites to quickly browse them. Personally, I have the Mozart Accu, BBC Online, NPR Boston, Comedy 104, and several other stations.

BarCode Scanner

Barcode Scanner, in conjunction with ShopSavvy, Compare Anywhere, or Anobit, allows you to scan barcodes. The first two apps use Barcode Scanner to scan UPC Codes and comparison shopping for scanned items. Anobit allows you to scan a UPC book using a Barcode Scanner and then you can add that book to your Anobi account (not just for iPhone anymore) on either your Shelf or Wish List.

My coupons

My Coupons tells you about deals, free offers, and coupons at various stores and stores. My husband also has this app, and one day he discovered that if we were dressed in a jersey or other sportswear, we could get a free sandwich from Chick-Fil-A. Now it says we can get a free Quizno subject with the purchase of another. Or take $10 off a $25 purchase at Yankee Candle. Keep scrolling for more and more and click on the one that interests you.

Pro Translate

I downloaded a few translation files and chose Pro Translate as the one to save. It is also translated from English, French, German, Czech, Hungarian and Russian (I have studied all languages to varying degrees) and a plethora of others. Looking up what you need to say on Saturday in Danish? Lordag (with a slash through o). For it is Or how do you say kitten in Albanian? Select languages, type “puppy” and click Translate. Kotele is shown. You can email, text, or tweet the event.

World Tour

Finally, World Tour is probably my favorite free app ever. Every time I use the mobile app, every time I turn on my phone or wake it up. It’s my football. World Tour allows you to set up a live shot from web cam to protect your home. Of course, Prague is mine. by Charles Mala Strana to be demanded from the Pontus. There are updates every 20 or 30 minutes. So now I can see my beloved Prague whenever I want. Actually, I wouldn’t have another camera.

So there you have it, 10 cool free apps for the T-Mobile G1. I’m sure it will work on MyTouch. I wish I could load the programs onto my SD card and run them from there. I will never have to delete the app again to make a new site. Sometimes he needs to be sad. These are the ones I will never let go of.
