10 Famous Canadian Cuisine Dishes
Canada is a great place to visit and live in my opinion, but we also have some pretty good cuisine here. Although not all of the dishes you read originated in Canada, most had ingredients added to them that made them unique and partially Canadian. So if you love food and are curious about what dishes come from this country, then feel free to read and enjoy!
1. (Quebec Poutine
Many people disagree that poutine originated in rural Quebec in the 1950s, but according to Canadian history it is true. Never the less, a true Quebec poutine consists of a layer of french fries both covered in cheese and topped with a hot chicken sauce to melt it all together. It’s a great cheap-snacks that is served at any restaurant or chip cart across Canada. If you ever visit Quebec, I strongly recommend trying one.
2. (Ginger Beef
When the Chinese immigrants came to Canada, there were a few recipes but while these recipes were used to feed the railway workers, they were of the field type, so the workers began to add even more of their own Chinese touches. This is a dish that is famous in Chinese restaurants in Calgary, Alberta. rolls in ginger and chili and cost about $10. It is described as having a crunch with a warm, broad flavor when you bite into it. It is wonderful to taste the dish next to new people who have experienced it.
3. (Father Chinois
This French Canadian Chinese dish is better known as Sheppard’s Pie. Although it is also known as “Chinese Pie” most of the ingredients could not be found in China at the time and originated in Quebec. The dish is made by layering ground beef in a pan, then a layer of corn then topped with mashed potatoes and cooked When it is finished, the cake must look perfect.
It’s not an exotic Canadian dish, but it’s quite popular from coast to coast, and it’s definitely a good meal to fill an appetite.
4. (Halifax Donair
Don’t know that the Donair is not a Canadian creation, but a shop called “The King of Donairs” in Halifax, Nova Scotia came up with its own sauce and method of cooking them and opened its first restaurant in 1973, which has been popular for decades.
Halifax residents swear it’s the best donut you can find anywhere in Canada. Basically donair can be made in a few ways, but the main ones are 4 different meats, cheese (sometimes) or vegetables that are heated and served. Most restaurants and pizza shops across Canada serve some form of pizza but the best in Canada you should visit is Nova Scotia.
5. (Montreal Smoking meat Sandwich
Now the smoked meat sandwich is nothing new and not invented by Canada but Montrealers and visitors to Canada swear that the Montreal smoked meat sandwich is the best in Canada.
Schwartz’s shop in Montreal has been specializing in and served the famous smoked meat sandwich for over 50 years now. Some visitors to the shop claim it looks like the Nazi soup kitchen on Seinfeld.
If you’re ever in Montreal, you won’t regret stopping in at Schwartz’s and grabbing yourself a sandwich.
6. (Flipper Pie
It’s okay out of nowhere to probably guess basically what’s in this dish. This is a famous traditional Newfoundland meal made from seal flippers, turnips and carrots mixed with a thick sauce with a crust. The average price of this unique dish is around $8.99 CAD.
I’m not a big sea food fan but my friends from Newfoundland swear it’s a really good dish.
7. (Canadian Bacon Layer)
This is a popular Canadian breakfast dish in most provinces. It basically consists of Canadian bacon, eggs, cheese and a few spices. It is the best breakfast to start the day and can be found in most restaurants across Canada.
Another popular way to make this dish on the East Coast is to omit the Canadian bacon and replace it with crab or lobster. Easily made by made at home it takes about an hour and a half from start to finish, but I personally prefer to get them from restaurants he would receive a special
8. (Wimpy Hamburger and Fries
Although most people love a really good roast from time to time, I hate the burgers you get at fast food restaurants< /a> that look like they’ve been kicked together . A few years back after moving to Peterborough, Ontario I was driving downtown and found this little diner called “Wimpy’s”. Although this dish is far from new, I’ve never personally seen it around Canada before, but I imagine there are some of these here in the States as well.
The breakfast was very small and an example of an old fifties cafe making me think the food is probably not all that good, but my friend had highly recommended this place to me weeks ago so I decided to try it. I ordered a burger that cost a little over $8.50 CAD and I thought to myself, this better be one good burger when you can get them at your local McDonalds for $1.39.
About 15-20 minutes later my burger was ready and I found myself completely surprised when I saw the size of this thing. No word of a lie the burger was like 4 patties long, that was sauteed on a bun and was fired to perfection and used the best Canadian beef. This monster burger took me about 30-40 minutes to finish but I was completely satisfied with it. So if you’ve never been to Wimpy’s Diner, then I highly recommend going to one of these places, because here in Canada they’re famous for great quality burgers that can’t be beat.
9. (Gotham Steak
Ok if you haven’t noticed by now yes, I am a huge food fiend and I love anything with meat in it. Next on the list is Canada’s famous Gotham Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar, which serves up some of the best steaks in Canada.
The restaurant, from what I said, is a typical American steakhouse model. This steakhouse is located in Vancouver, British Columbia and is rated by locals as the best steakhouse around.
Visitors and locals say the food is very good and a little expensive, but you know the old saying “You pay for quality.”
10. (Especially wings and ribs in Toronto
Here we have a plate of wings from “All Star Wings and Ribs” in Toronto, Ontario. The establishment opened in 2003 and residents and visitors to the area swear for a lifetime that these are the best wings and ribs in Canada.
The restaurant boosts having the hottest wings around called “Armageddon” which requires you to sign a waiver before eating. He also claimed to have the best ribs this side of Texas.
So if ever in the Toronto area people highly recommend going to the All Star Wings and Ribs. Why not with over 100 different flavors of wings there is something for everyone. A must try if ever in Canada.
So this is my list of favorite Canadian dishes not to be confused with foods that originate in Canada.
