Halloween may be one of my favorite holidays because it allows me to express my creativity. Every year I try to show off my festive side by dressing up in some way, and for six years my candle, Daisy has joined in the celebrations. Granted, she doesn’t enjoy wearing clothes as much as I do seeing her in them, but I like it, so she gives it away most of the time. I had a hard time deciding what to do with our family this year, so I ended up with a few dog costume ideas. Here are three easy, do-it-yourself dog costume ideas.
As for my dog Daisy being a canine, this outfit means a bit of a cop-out because they are known for hunting dogs, but in my defense not many people have seen her in a hunting outfit. To pull off this outfit, Daisy wore a camouflage collar and belt with an orange safety vest. She already owns these, but then you can get them for your dog in any toy or freedom store pet is delivered.
You could also do this outfit with a belt and a black belt, a child-sized camouflage t-shirt, and a small piece of bright orange fabric from stories or cut from an old piece of clothing.
Bones
This outfit really only requires a coat that fits your dog with skeleton design. I was able to find a number of children’s pajamas with a skeleton pattern on them thrift store; and every little seam was made to fit perfectly. However, you can also create this look with a simple black coat and some fabric paint. All you have to do is fit your dog’s shirt, paint in your design, and you’re all set.
Flower
I’m shocked I haven’t worn Daisy as a flower before, but I really never thought about it until last year. What is even more surprising is that dressing a dog with a flower seems quite simple. I felt all I needed was some color – I decided on a pink flower and green leaves – and a pattern of both.
To meet, I felt the leaves and petals from a long piece while the daisy was collared and a little more than twice as wide. Then I arranged the leaves and with the petals from one edge the length of the leaf. Once I had everything in place, I slowly folded the tube or pocket in half and sewed through the seam. After sewing the piece, I slipped the Daisy collar into the sleeve, and I was all set.
Finally decided that Daisy would be a skeleton for Halloween this year. We’re all into that skin, but the skeleton closely matches the “day of the dead” theme my husband is going with.
