Quail, of whatever species, can be rewarding. We raise both Japanese and Bob the White Quail to our farm. They are beautiful, docile, raised around humans from the beginning, and are a healthy source of meat and eggs. Once you know it is legal to remove quail in your area, you will decide which species you would like to remove. No matter what type you prefer, there are things you can do to make keeping your flock easier.
Dwelling
How you set up your quail house depends on the species you choose and what to raise them with. For example, if you raise Bob White Quail released for hunting, you will need to raise them in place. to establish an avian genus. This allows the birds to be less constrained, so that they can fly as in nature. If the birds are released to hunt, you want to interact with them as little as possible. This type of enclosure can be cleaned effectively enough that the inside is flushed out on a weekly or monthly basis.
Another option for quail housing, such as the one we chose, is to build a cage. A quail will require one square foot per bird of catch space. Having a hardware cloth for the floor allows the drips to fall through the floor or pan under the cage. For this reason, cages raised two or three feet from the ground are easier to clean and odor control. . Generally, the odor is only a concern if the birds are kept indoors or really warm during the summer months. A regular granary of lime, which is found at your farm, works well sprinkled under the cages to neutralize the smell.
CAGE ACCESSORIES
While it is not necessary to include any perches in the cages, adding in a limb with branches can provide an area for the birds to sit on or under. A liter box or dust pan filled with sand is necessary for those who love to pick up dirt every day.
Another thing to remember is the winter light. Depending on the type of quail you have, you could get eggs every day for a year by providing light for 14 hours a day. Our quails need a tent for each other light with an energy efficient 13-watt bulb.
Food and water
Quail make great food for food and water. We use rabbit water bottles that hang outside the cage when it just boils inside the cage. I have built two types of feeds. The first plan is to first cut off half a quarter of a two-liter bottle, and break it upside down and then machine it so that the top of the bottle hangs over the bottom half. Then the two holes left in the middle are used to pierce the bird’s head to get food.
If you want something more substantial that can be protected from the rain, put the end cap on the PVC connection that has an angle of 45 degrees, then attach the high part of the PVC to the corner of the end hole. Place the corner piece inside the cage and it will cut out a space to attach part of the feeding tube. Be careful not to feed too much around open-space”>open, then there are no potential chances of harming the birds. Feeding and watering tasks move much faster when it is not necessary to open the cages.
Taking a few steps to prepare for your new care ahead of time will make the ownership experience much more enjoyable.
