So it’s a tough year to find jobs? It is certainly more difficult for those who want to enter the financial industry; but some simple changes can make a big difference.
Strategy 1: don’t just rely on one channel
I also heard many candidates; including me in the past; to just use the Internet like Monster.com, careerbuilder.com or seek.com for jobs; these also have more challenges;
Problem 1: There are also thousands of other people looking at this Job Ad.
Problem 2: Many of these jobs are called “prohibited”. either already deposited or just deposited because of the “Equal Opportunity” program, this is what can be frustrating when you see the day it starts to deposit immediately but then it takes 6 months to get back to you.
Problem 3: Repetition of jobs by established institutions; I applied for one job and was approached by 16 managers in total, and I got the same job!
Strategy 2: Cover Letter is like a Resume
Too many websites only allow you to send a quick cover letter; it does not even allow some letters to be covered. Avoid these pages and instead send a direct email to the company you are interested in; but with a “Personal” cover letter.
I have found that many employers spend more time reading your letter than your resume, often repeating the same thing, but the cover letter will show your time to make unique points about yourself.
Strategy 3, Illustrate points about the company
The first question often asked in interviews: What do you know about our company?
Some good answers that led me to further conversations were: I am your partner; and we bought it! I read your report from Analyst X; He found it quite interesting, which prompted him to join this firm. And behold, I had your competitors; and they believe that by making plots they strike; make sure they belong to the company you applied for.
Strategy 4: Subject Line Strategy
We’ve used this strategy for joining projects and I think they’re very relevant to job hunting. Have a distinctive subject line, not something like “Career Opportunities”. Make your headline relevant to: Looking for a Financial Analyst in the CleanTech sector? Or do you have a Specialized Analyst in the IT sector in China?
Do something special to get their attention; open new doors you can create new positions just for you, this was an effective strategy to get me the last 3 jobs .
Strategy V, Networking and More Networking
More than 50% of jobs these days are through networking for direct advertising. Networking is very powerful both online and offline, empower yourself with more ideas through Social Media.
However, don’t just ask everyone in your network if they can help with the job; to know them, and to observe their figure and society; tell them about your skills, or apply directly to their company, why your skills are relevant to them.
Strategy 6: Have your own blog
It’s really interesting, I’ve been asked 6 times in the past year in interviews if I have my own blog. This should generally be done in order to be relevant to a new job seeker, as prospective employers will appreciate your blog if you have good writing skills. and what skills and things. But this also means your blog can also work against you especially if it’s a personal issue.
Many companies are actually considering hiring, but aren’t sure if it’s time. Through the network; I have held jobs in the past as Equity Analyst and Industry Analyst; which started as a 3 month contract and eventually turned into a 6 year job.
