For those living in or visiting Carroll County, MD on the 4th of July, Westminster’s “Old Fashioned July 4th Celebration” is a must.
It takes place at historic Westminster’s Carroll County Farm Museum, a lovely place to socialize with family and friends. This celebration draws some of the Farm Museum’s biggest crowds, as the birthday of America is greatly celebrated.
The festivities begin at noon and last through the evening hours, when the beautiful fireworks display, known as the “Fabulous Fireworks Display,” begins at 9:30 pm (no specific ending time is given). The fireworks are some of the finest around, they soar through the air showing off vibrant colors. In fact, they are so beautiful, that those who are out in the town will notice many parked cars in surrounding shopping centers, schools, and churches, filled with people enjoying the fireworks from afar.
But long before the astonishing fireworks, everyone can enjoy on-stage, live entertainment from 1:00-7:00 pm. Additionally, many craft vendors will be present–so bring some spending money! Even Uncle Sam usually makes an appearance, a sure hit with the children. And of course, there will be plenty of cook-out style food.
Another favorite activity at the Farm Museum is the Guided Tour of the historic farmhouse. This year, tours will be given from 12 noon until 6 pm. According to the Carroll County Farm Museum’s website, “The Farmhouse features six rooms depicting 19th Century farm life. A collection of milk bottles from Carroll County and other Maryland dairies will be on exhibit in the large hall case, and children’s toys from the Museum’s collection, circa 1870-1920 will be displayed in the bowfront china cabinet in the Dining Room.
Also, volunteer artisans will show off their skills as though they are straight from the 1800’s.
Finally, they are a few paid events that will take place: an excursion around Museum grounds, on a mule-pulled wagon and a paid children’s play area. A one-time fee will ensure children an all-day pass to play (from noon-8 pm).
Other events (including the farm house tour) are free, with the price of $5.00 general admissions for adults, $3.00 for ages 7-18 and 60 and over, and free for ages six and under.
The Carroll County Farm Museum provides an excellent family atmosphere, as the whole town seems to come together for the festivities. Entering the farm museum is like entering the 19th century. A perfect way to celebrate America’s birthday!
