Since turkey dinners are the most popular Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner cooked by family and restaurants in the United States, why not go for a change with a Thanksgiving prime rib dinner? This could be a change for the whole family this Thanksgiving since Christmas is a month away.
I have had prime rib several times when my husband’s company attends their annual Christmas party for the wives of the local foundries in our area. I enjoy these prime rib dinners just after Thanksgiving and before Christmas because it is a change from the usual turkey dinners we over indulge in under 30 days. There have been times I have had four turkey dinners in as many days when I was working retail. That was due to the companies I worked for having company dinners in-store for their employees.
Now let’s get down to a Thanksgiving or Christmas prime rib dinner menu. I am going to provide the appetizers, main dish, side dishes, drink, and dessert recipes under each of these categories for a Thanksgiving or Christmas prime rib dinner. Some of the items listed for this Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner I have eaten. There are a few things listed that I haven’t eaten before, but thought they would make a great addition to this Thanksgiving or Christmas prime rib dinner menu.
Prime Rib Dinner Menu Drinks
I don’t think any Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner would be complete without cranberries. The drink that I am listing with this Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner menu is a cranberry drink with jalapenos. I’m not sure I’d like the jalapeno’s in it but the rest of the ingredients of the drink makes it sound good.
Cranberry-Jalapeno Granita
TIP: You could leave the jalapeno’s out of the drink if you don’t want them in it or don’t like them.
NOTE: You can also serve tea, coffee, or wine as other types of drinks for your prime rib dinner for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Prime Rib Dinner Menu Appetizers
You will only want to choose one of the appetizers to serve for your prime rib dinner on Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Stuffed Mushroom Appetizers
Stuffed mushrooms have been around for quite some time. Normally the small mushroom caps are used in this appetizer. In the past few years, shiitake and portobello mushrooms have been added to the stuffed mushroom list. I will provide a recipe for each of these types of mushrooms.
TIP: Button mushrooms, the small white round topped ones, are the cheapest of the three types of mushrooms. This may be of help if you have spent the largest amount of your budget on the prime rib roast or prime rib cuts.

NOTE: You can serve a standard green garden salad instead of the stuffed mushrooms or both. This will depend on how many courses you want to serve for your Thanksgiving or Christmas prime rib dinner. You could also substitute the stuffed mushrooms for shrimp with cocktail sauce.

You can use the prime recipe listed with the last stuffed mushroom recipe or the one that is listed below. The one listed below tells how many people you can feed per rib on the roast.
Cooking Perfect Prime Rib – Standing Rib Roast
When we eat at the restaurants that serve prime rib for the Christmas parties I mentioned earlier, they normally served dinner rolls, mash potatoes, broccoli, and carrots as their Side Dishes. At one restaurant that we have eaten at during this party, they served garlic mashed potatoes. The other restaurant served the standard whipped mashed potatoes.
Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes
TIP: If you don’t like garlic in your mashed potatoes, you can substitute grated cheese in place of the garlic. You could also add parsley flakes for an extra added touch of flair.
NOTE: If you aren’t a mashed potato fan, you can boil your potatoes like normal. Drain them when they are fork tender. You can butter them, add salt and pepper, and sprinkle parsley flakes on top as a different way to serve the potatoes.
Prime Rib Dinner Menu Desserts
There are so many dessert ideas that could be served with this prime rib dinner for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I don’t know where to start. Rather than giving a link for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dessert, I am going to provide a few ideas instead.
Cheesecake – You can use a store bought cheese cake for this dessert if you don’t want to make your own. Walmart has a variety of different cheesecakes you can buy in their bakery department. They are reasonably priced in my mind considering the ingredients it takes to make one along with the baking time. I am going to suggest buying a plain cheesecake and do a search for a cranberry sauce that can be spooned over the top. If you want to make your own, search for a pumpkin cheesecake. Either of these would top off a Thanksgiving prime rib dinner.
Pies – A pecan, pumpkin, chess, or another type of pie that has a creamy filling may work well with this prime rib dinner.
Creme’ Brulee’ or Custards – A rich creamy custard would be another thing to consider for a dessert for this prime rib dinner.
