Best Areas to Visit in Sweden from South to North

Although Sweden is a beautiful and friendly country, it is a relatively uncommon travel destination. In Sweden there is something for everyone-nature lovers, city slickers, history buffs. Everyone should explore Sweden’s exciting landscape, and below is a list of the best places to visit throughout the country.

Lund

Lund is a small Medieval university town in Southern Sweden. It holds a very special place in my heart because I studied abroad there for half a year. Lund is a great place to visit for anyone that loves history. Even the cobblestones below your feet make you feel like you’re in Medieval Europe. Make sure to visit Lund Cathedral, one of Sweden’s oldest churches and a beautiful centerpiece to the town.

This town is also exciting for young people due to the vibrant student life. Throughout the town there are groups called “Nations,” which are student groups that run night clubs almost every night of the week. Even on a Tuesday or Wednesday you can party and dance the night away. The nations have different themes and styles of music, so all travelers should be able to find something they like. A night in Lund is a definite must for student travelers.

Helsingborg

Actually pronounced “Helsingbory” in Swedish, Helsingborg is beautiful city in Southern Sweden. The coast of Helsinborg is the area of Sweden closest to Denmark, and across the shore you can actually see the Danish town of Helsingor, where Hamlet takes place. If you are an art lover, check out the Dunkers Kulturhus, a beautiful white building that houses many art exhibits. Also, be sure to see the Kärnan tower, which was part of an old Medieval castle.

Götiborg

Götiborg, more commonly known as Gothenburg, is Sweden’s second biggest city. It houses a large exciting theme park, which although expensive, has many thrilling rides. As a coastal city, Götiborg has amazing seafood. If you love fresh salmon and shrimp, definitely visit The Fish Church, which sells freshly caught and prepared seafood.

Stockholm

Stockholm is of course the best known of Swedish cities and its reputation is well-deserved. Stockholm is divided into several areas with unique cultural flares and histories. One of the most interesting is Gamla Stan, or Stockholm’s old town. It has narrow streets that twist and turn and is a real adventure to explore. Also make sure to try some street food. My personal favorite, although it may sound strange, is fried herring with mashed potatoes and a number of various condiments.

In Stockholm, there are also a number of exciting museums to visit. One the best is the Vasa museum, which showcases the 17th century ship Vasa which sunk on her maiden voyage. Each level of the museum depicts different aspects of the ship, such as the technology used to build it, the beautiful artwork caused into the ship’s wood, and 17th century culture. One of the most interesting exhibits is in the museum’s basement and features the skeletons of the ship’s passengers with information that scientists have uncovered about their age, gender, and health. It’s a truly amazing museum and definitely worth a visit.

Abisko National Park

Abisko is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. It is in the northernmost region of Sweden. I visited in early winter, and every nature lover should go there at some point. In the summer, visitors can easily traverse the beautiful landscape and see the midnight sun. But Abisko in winter is also not to be missed. There are many possible hiking trails, and in the snow, the landscape is truly Swedish. At night, the Northern Lights can be seen in the sky throughout the winter, a phenomenon that everyone should see at least once in their lives.

After Abisko, where next? These are only a few of the areas of Sweden that should be visited, but there is so much more, so don’t stop here. Keep exploring and have fun!
