Movies: we watch them on our phones, tablets and TVs; on rainy days we watch them in cinemas and when we feel nostalgic we find a drive-in. When Boston residents want some entertainment, an outdoor leisure activity and to feel like you’re a part of your community, you head to one of the summertime outdoor movie events. Each year these venues host a summer movies series in Boston. Check with each location for the schedule of movie features.
Movies by Moonlight
Movies by Moonlight is one part of the Summer in the City Entertainment Series which also include concerts. Everyone can enjoy free classic movies shown on the water side of the Boston Harbor Hotel on Friday nights. Movies start at dusk.

Free Friday Flicks
It’s a tradition that’s older than your favorite college student: free movies at the Hatch Shell. All you need to bring is a blanket and some snacks. WBZ sponsors the event with blockbuster movies or “modern classics.” Previously, Free Friday Flicks featured “Despicable Me,” “Megamind,” and “The Wizard of Oz.
The movies start at dusk, so get there in time to set up your space and enjoy a late summer picnic. For more information, check back with WBZ for the complete movie schedule. The Hatch Shell is located at along the Charles River. Via the T, take the Red Line and exit at the Charles/MGH stop and cross the Arthur Fiedler footbridge to the Esplanade. From the Green Line, “exit at the Arlington stop, walk up Arlington Street towards the Charles River, and cross the Arthur Fiedler footbridge to the Esplanade” advises the Hatch Shell website.
Outdoor Movie Mondays
Mondays lose the blues when you can look forward to an evening out of the house and away from that pile of work you accidentally took home. Each Monday enjoy free popcorn and a movie at sunset. Free Family Film Festival
Watch movies on Saturday evenings starting at sundown in July and August. There is a charge for the movies but discounted parking is available if you’re driving. The event features pre-movie activities to keep kids entertained, beginning at 6 p.m. The Free Family Film Festival takes place at the South Garden of the Prudential Center, 800 Boylston Street, Boston, 02199.
