It was my 45th birthday in 2000 and my husband wanted to know what I wanted. I wasn’t really sure. A couple of months ago someone had stolen our two Labs and thought maybe I should get another dog. It was like a scale that I couldn’t even lift up.
So, after some thought, I decided I needed something to hold me while my husband was at work. We decided to go to the Mallcreek tour in Erie at Heartland Pets. It’s a familiar sight every time you walk into a pet store. The puppies are all vying for your attention and you’re not sure which one you want.
And then, lo and behold, there’s one fella that pulls at hearts. Unfortunately, the other couple were also watching him. In store, the buyer had a “prospective purchase” to see how playful. they were
Well, needless to say, my heart skipped a beat because this couple seemed to be as interested as I was in this little Yorkshire Terrier< / a>. I’ve been trying to look around to see if I could add another puppy to the store without much luck.
I looked at how much I could notice without them. Then at last they brought him back from the room and gave him to the cellar. They say they will give him some thought. Well, I don’t need to tell you that I don’t have to think at all!
My husband and I went through the motions and put him in the cell to play with this precious little guy. It was that; We were hooked. This puppy weighed barely four pounds. About $1000.00 later we were the proud owners of a Yorkie.
I couldn’t wait to get him home (especially since he threw up all the way.) Dear God, he was so precious! He was the most adorable thing I had ever seen! As soon as you had reached the door, I let him down to check his surroundings. At one point I remember looking around what he was doing. And, of course, he was doing his trick. I remember my husband saying, “Honey, look, he’s doing it!”
Later that night my honey was sleeping on the couch sitting on my chair with the new “purchase” name still trying to come up. Well, if any of you are familiar with the look of York, then you know that he is a pack of big brown eyes. Suddenly this old song popped into my head, something like that. Cracking Jeepers, where would you get these eyes?
You do not know; my husband wakes up to hear me sing this to my little guy and says “Let’s call him Mr. Peepers!” Needless to say he liked it. The next few years with Mr. Peepers were absolutely wonderful. He is my honor and joy.
At the time we were living in Wattsburg in northern Pennsylvania. (I’m telling you this because it leads to one of my greatest memories.) My husband, who was called Fozzie, started playing mountain ball. We went to the baseball park every Sunday (that is, me and Mr. Peepers) to watch Dad and his team play against opposing teams.
Everyone loved Mr. Peepers. Mehercule had one hell of a personality! I just want to run off and do my thing because I knew it would though. The funniest thing he’s ever done is go up to the opposing team’s duffel bag and pee in it. You couldn’t roar!
After a while two young ladies wanted to know if I was going to join Mr. Peepers with his Chihuahua Weezie. I said sure, why not? Their little girl was a little bigger than my little buddy, so they jokingly asked if we needed a box to stand on. She did not do well, and she gave birth and had four beautiful puppies If you didn’t know, you’d better think that puppies are Rottweilers because of their characteristics.
Later this year we decided to get a Peepers cheater. I found a newspaper for Yorkie puppies for sale just across the line in Ohio. We could go and buy a lovely girl. I later named her Schatzi (that’s a German name.) Brilliantly, but beautifully, she had in mind. She refused to come when you called her to save her life!
In 2002 we moved back to my husband’s home in Waterford, not far from where we lived. It was summer time and the weather was exceptionally beautiful at that time of year. But the boy, because Schatzi had a bad habit of chasing rabbits. Unfortunately, I’ve had no luck trying to hack it.
In the winter of that year, on the 18th of November, that evening I gave them their business as usual. After two minutes I went to enter. I called them but got no sign. So I figured maybe two more minutes and they were ready to go. They never stayed long when it was cold.
I called again and again, but this time I was more anxious. Where were my children? Then all my neighbors suddenly told me about two dogs that had been hit by a car on the road. Oh no, this cannot be done! But it was. My little Schatzi was instantly killed and my husband Mr. Peepers found himself still clinging to life on the road.
They rushed him to the vet hospital in Erie all night praying that it would be okay. They sent us home, and I had every hope that I would make it. The next morning I called because I was afraid. My little buddy did not make it. I was devastated. How will this be done?
The pain was almost unbearable. I haven’t felt that terrible since my father passed away. What would I do without my little guy? He could stop screaming. I’m not sure why my husband and I left where we lived. We decided to stop and have a beer at the bar where our friend worked. Needless to say, I broke down in tears when I told Lisa, our friend, what had happened.
She was still telling us about one of Mr. Peeper’s puppies (who was nine months old at the time.) I’m not sure how but I wanted to see her. (Lisa said we could have her if we wanted.) I really didn’t have another puppy to prepare. Maybe it was divine or something, but I’ll check it out. After all, Peepers was a puppy. It’s like she reached out and grabbed my heart like her father did not too long ago.
The rest is history. We named her Miss Muffin. He helped mend our broken hearts. And something else, riding a motorcycle likes to go with us. We are glad to see our friend that night. We will never forget Pepper as long as we live, or Schatzi. But, Mr. Savings will always have a special place in my heart as long as I live . Now I have a name, Muffy. God bless and sweet dreams Mr. Peepers and may the lice not bite.
Actually hooked, this puppy barely weighs four pounds and my husband spent almost $1000.00!
