That lets face it. The cost of feeding a family goes up more and more every day they go to the grocery store. These rising costs are forcing shoppers on limited incomes to look for ways to cut their grocery bill. Budgeting for groceries is important but with volatile prices, being prepared to change how you cook is essential in order to cut your grocery bill.
One way I was able to cut my family’s grocery bill was by substituting less expensive items for the meals we used to eat. Substituting canned chicken for fresh can help cut the cost of your grocery bill. Canned chicken can be bought on sale, in full pantries and on used weeks with less money for shopping. The cost of many recipes that call for Chicken Broth (you can mix this from packets)
1/4 tsp. garlic powder OR 2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 bag of frozen veggies (I use a cauliflower, cabbage and carrot mix)
1 large canned drained chicken
4 cups hot cooked Spaghetti (watch for B1G1 Free sale!)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Stir the cornstarch and 1/4 cup broth in a small bowl until the mixture is smooth.
Bring the remaining broth, garlic powder, and frozen veggies to a boil in a 3-quart saucepan over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for 5 minutes or until the vegetables are crisp tender. Stir the cornstarch mixture in a saucepan. Cook and stir until it boils and thickens. Stir in the chicken and cook until the mixture is hot and bubbling. Toss the chicken mixture with the spaghetti and cheese.
This is a recipe that you would use mushrooms, or fresh tomatoes, or zucchini, or whatever you have on hand. You can use green peppers, onions, fresh cauliflower, etc. The key to reducing costs beyond using canned chicken is to get the right amount of what you have on hand.
If not corn starch, thick flour. If you don’t have Parmesan, throw a little mozzarella on top. If you don’t have cheese at all, add another seasoning or add more garlic for added flavor.
Consequent 3 – Chicken and Dumplings
1 or 2 cans of canned chicken
2 cans of cream of chicken soup
canned beans (drained)
Bisquick
2 cups of water
Bring the water to a boil, add the canned chicken (no need to drain). Chicken soup add soup and drained beans. Heat to a boil. Mix the dumplings according to the trail mix recipe and pour into the boiling broth. Cook until the dumplings are done.
Recipe 4 – Cheesy Chicken Cups
Ingredients:
1 cookie can (10 cookies)
1 large canned chicken shortening
I can cream of chicken soup
2/3 C. shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 t. black pepper
Instructions:
Place each bite in the muffin pan. Press the cookies into the bowl and hold until the sides of the bowl are filled. In a bowl, mix the chicken, soup, cheese, and pepper. Mix well. Spoon evenly into bowls. Bake at CD for 12-15 minutes
Recipe 5. Fatigue Tuna Salad
It can also be chicken
mayo
boiled egg, chopped
green onion, finely chopped
salt, pepper, to taste
One large canned chicken (drained) can be substituted in tuna salad recipe to fill or make a sandwich. wrap or pita filling. Finely chop the canned chicken and mix with the other ingredients. Refrigerate until serving. With salad consider items such as olives or grapes. Consider substituting horseradish or horseradish for some.
Watch out for these canned chicken sales, and grab a few to help cut the cost of your evening meal. Substituting just one drug can reduce your costs.
