As a symbol of longevity, wisdom and strength in many cultures around the world, bamboo has an appeal that few other plants can match. While most people think of bamboo as an outdoor garden plant, it can actually be grown inside easily, lending an exotic look to any décor.
You planted bamboo
Like other house plants, bamboos require well-drained and rich nutrient soil, sufficient light, humidity and fertilizer. Because flowering is rare and sometimes vital damage to bamboos, the best fertilizer to use is a high-nitrogen, low solution such as 30-10-10 potash, although a balanced solution such as 16-16-16 is fine. An aqueous fertilizer is preferred because it reduces the potential for fertilizer to burn.
Fear not, caring for your bamboo plant. It is patient and forgiving, and an occasional manicure is key to keeping your plant looking its best. Deformed or withered culms (stems) by cutting in a mass of soil. Check the height of each culm by cutting just above the knot, and if the bamboo reaches your ceiling, it will not be allowed to “stack”.
Potting Tips
Most bamboo houseplants grow best in moderately acidic soil. You can buy potting soil potting specially for acid-loving plants (such as azaleas and camellias) or mix it with any purpose and add some material organic as jet moss.
It is important to choose a pot of the proper size for the plant. Use an adequate container for soil and plant roots with at least two inches between the sides and the root ball container. Bamboos are fast growers, though, and then need to be “potted” to a larger container.
Adequation Requirements
Bamboos do not like saturated soil, be careful not to overwater. Saturated soils will leave no room for oxygen, and will cause root rot, eventually killing the plant.
A lack of sufficient water is also capable of killing your bamboo house plant, however, it is best determined in this way. it must be watered with the finger test. Simply stick a finger or two in the soil about an inch, and if it feels wet, you can wait another day or two.
Light Requirements
Proper planting is probably the most important factor in the success of a house plant. Light provides a source of energy for the plant, and results in little or no need for growth or death. Lamps burning in fluorescent or special incandescent bulbs can supplement the natural light that bamboo receives. They are easy to use and can also add ambiance to your room.
Another tip to keep a bamboo house plant is happy, the higher the temperature in your house, the brighter. let there be light. Adjusting for heat and light differences in winter and summer will help bamboo thrive.
To increase humidity, place pots in a tray with pebbles and a little water, or use humidifiers to add moisture to the air. Knowing about plants is sometimes useful.
With a little care and attention, bamboo has an amazing ability to thrive and delight. I hope these tips will help you enjoy continued success with your bamboo houseplants.
A side note on “Lucky Bamboo” plant
These small green stems sold in containers of water and rocks, often called Lucky Bamboo, Chinese Bamboo or Curly Bamboo, are not at all. A common house plant is the Dracaena family, and none of the plant care tips above will apply. However, Lucky Bamboo is a hardy plant that can survive in very mild conditions, and is very easy to care for. Choose a place with good air circulation, avoiding cold drinks, heat vents and direct sunlight. Clean water is essential, so keep your Lucky Bamboo plant healthy by regularly replacing the container with water.
In China, Lucky Bamboo plants are considered signs of good fortune in Feng Shui. New trades are often offered with these plants, which are kept near the entrance to attract luck. Chinese New Year is celebrated by a lucky bamboo to bring prosperity for the new year. Lucky Bamboo is also attributed to health (Chi), harmony and peace.
