Our holiday this year 2009 was to be done on a much smaller scale than two years ago. Between the economy and my lack of a full-time job, we decided that some overnight trips and day trips would be the solution. In Cincinnati Ohio was Coney Island Park. I went there a few years ago and had a wonderful time. It’s a wonder time doesn’t change.
Coney Island Park is located on the Ohio River just about 275 miles from Route 75, and on the Kentucky border. It’s about one o’clock and they drive fifteen minutes from us in Kettering. Because of its location, it is very easy to get directions and the exits are well marked.
Coney Island Park is not one of the major amusement parks and there are many pluses to it. The first of which is that we came on a holiday and didn’t have any lines or crowds at all. I’m sure the weekend trip would have more crowds, but even then you’re not facing hour-long waits to board. Most of the time the workers seemed to wait for us to ride and in the vehicles with no lines the teenagers could stay in the vehicles when they finished so they could ride again. We are only waiting for what was there for roller coaster.
The park does not have a large number of “taunt” but rides, but it is enough to delight my teenagers and enough to make their 49 year happy mother without physical harm Also the park has a nice group of “kiddie” rides for the smaller set.
A Sunlite pool is also located in the public park. Sunlite Pool is a very large water park with two acres of water fun including one acre shallow water area, six diving boards in the deep pool floor and in-pool slides. A new attraction added this year is the Twister, at 45 feet high with four chutes and more than a quarter mile long, you’ll have your money’s worth of fun.
Coney Island Park has several grilling areas and the prices are reasonable. We found the food fresh and tasty portions more than we needed. We didn’t have to wait forever to get our food, and we found plenty of places to sit while we ate. Two of the best features are found here, which are allowed in your picnic, they also have a separate area for eating and plenty of shade in the park. Most of the parks I’ve been to don’t seem to have trees, but this one is plenty and other places are covered in slacks.
There is also a miniature golf course available for mini-golf enthusiasts. The cost is an additional $1.00 with park admission or $3.00 without. This is where Coney Island Park really shines over other amusement parks. It is not necessary to enjoy the park itself. You can just go for a picnic, golf or relax in the environment. There is a crime in the parking lot.
Costs at the time of this writing are $11.95 for adult admission to ride or water park or $21.95 for admission to both. Discounts are given for ages three and under or for admission after 4 p.m. They are also available for sale. I had a coupon for buy one $21.95 admission get one free. This was good for up to six people so we both got the park for me and three teenagers for $43.90. Too bad it’s full of day fun and we never got to the water park area. We were busy with all the rides and other activities. When you consider that we don’t have to wait in any lines for rides or food, you can see that we are really busy. all the time
Another plus to smaller size is the park which is very clean, including the restrooms. I didn’t find letters strewn everywhere and the park workers really seemed to enjoy their jobs. The only disadvantage I found was the price of bottled water. It seemed a little high. Although you can make your own. I joined two bottles the night before and had a huge amount of cold water to drink when needed. They don’t have a spring to drink, but the water is not as cold as some would like.
We were all there about 11.a.m. opening time until about 7.p.m. when at last we were all exhausted. Two of the three teenagers fell asleep in the car on the way home and I wasn’t in pain the next day so I think this was a very successful trip!
