Highland Park is one of St. Paul’s, Minnesota’s more distinct areas. The persona has everything – fun, tasty and casually cool. The area consists of mostly upscale residential homes, with a variety of restaurants, shops and specialty offices. Highland Park was settled in 1848 by William Finn, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. In 1925, the Ford Motor Company opened a plant in the Twin Cities. The Ford plant anchored the area until the company announced in 2007 that it would be closed in 2008. Since 1925, Highland Park has enjoyed growing interest in the area as a place for families and singles alike to live and enjoy a small-town feel with urban amenities.
As a true layman of the land and people who live in Highland Park, head to Highland Grill. Located at 771 Cleveland Ave, the grill is a signature urban dining experience. The restaurant prides itself on serving fresh, organic food with a small but decent wine and beer list. The grill is owned by a local husband and wife who employ a friendly staff that adds to the casual, slightly rocky atmosphere. Across the street from Highland Grill, on Ford Parkway, grab your wallet and head to Patina. This is the Twin Cities hotspot (one of three locations) for wacky gifts and eclectic-cool home decor. Patina carries jewelry, purses, and other goods from local artisans that you’ll only be able to find at one-of-a-kind prices. This is one of the best treasures that depict the lunch box of The Last Supper, and the cookbook from Countess Barefoot.
Cross one street and peek into the R.F. Moeller Jeweller, one of the jewelers in the cities. Or head into Barnes and Noble/Starbucks to pick up a book and coffee. If you want to stay local (and I assure you of this), drop Barnes and Noble at Half Price Books . You’ll find an amazing selection of books, both current and classic, for at least half the publisher’s price. The store carries a terrific selection of collector’s editions by authors Harper Lee, Steven King, and Rudyard Kipling. For coffee, check out White Rock Coffee Roasters which offers delicious brews made from natural, organic and fair trade coffee . To satisfy your sweet tooth, try their yummy mocha!
Other notable stops in Highland Park include the Highland Theater (which shows such house art as Pan’s Labrynth), the Chatterbox Pub (where you can play a vintage Atari game or board game while you wait for your food), Tiffany Games Bar and Grill (hangout for local college students, features live rock music on the weekends) and Nedved Flowers and Gifts (pick up a bouquet of flowers for yourself loose or have a little ecclesiastical gift, and it will flourish for another).
