The first time I ran into Ali MacGraw was at the front desk of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter in 1997. I had to look twice before I knew for sure it was her. He showed the staff an injured baby mammal of a species he did not recognize that he had found at his house and was placed in a shoe, and asked if he could take care of it. I didn’t want to act like a starfighter, so I waited in silence until you were done with her and they were ready to help me. I moved to Santa Fe six months ago and I was unaware of the shelter to find a cat companion. d with a movie star competing for the staff’s attention. I ended up with an orange tiger cat that day. Ali MacGraw, for those who may be too young to know much about her, is an actress, now 69, who became a star after appearing in two movies, “Goodbye Columbus” and “Love Story.” He won an Oscar for “Love Story” and Golden Globes for his roles in both films. He has appeared in other films, TV shows and other works, including “The Winds of War” and “Dynasty”. Ali is married to two attractive and complex people, Robert Evans, producer and actor Steve Mcqueen, having a son with Evans.
I found out after our visit that Ali lived in Tesuque, a village north of Santa Fe, and that she was an active social and animal advocate. I was formally introduced to her at the Roundhouse (of the New Mexico Legislature) about two years after I first saw her at the animal shelter mutual acquaintances who worked for the Animal Shelter of New Mexico. Ali smiled and said, “I’m so glad you’re here to take in the animals” (or for that matter, it was pretty noisy that day). We were involved in the New Mexico felony animal cruelty bill. Ali was very involved in the successful lobbying effort to get it passed, as he was in other important animal bills, such as the ban that hit this spring. Saint FeAnimal Shelter was also a great supporter as well as an adoptive parent of some homeless animals. there and a friend and partner of the former entertainment director, the kind and hard-working Kate Rindy.
When I lived in Santa Fe, I saw Ali at political parties (he’s a liberal and a fan of Dennis Kucinich) standing quietly with the rest of us less famous types, as well as at various animal protection events. I observed this dramatic lesson for the media from a small cage to the same size chimpanzee in custody at the Coulston Lab of vivisection in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
