Best Bagel Shops in Charlottesville, VA

Historic Charlottesville, Virginia is known as the home of one of the nation’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, and the University of Virginia School. What many people don’t realize is that the “Corner” area, and the UVA campus itself, in Charlottesville is also home to some amazing Bagel Shops.

Bodo’s Bagels opened in Charlottesville in 1988 on Emmett Street, and has expanded to three locations, including my favorite one on the University “Corner” near the Rotunda at 1609 University Avenue. Telephone: (434) 293-621.

Bodo makes all of his baguettes from scratch daily in the “New York” style, by roasting them before cooking. The bags also have varieties, such as Plain, Sesame, Poppy, Garlic, Salt, All, Cinnamon, Raisin, to 100% Whole wheat Bagels on the field, everything, and cinnamon and rye. You can bag it with one of many homemade-ice-cream creams, which include Herb, Scallion, Olive ;Vegetable, Walnut Raisin, Blueberry, Lox and Honey Butter and Egg Bagels with Cheese, Ham, Bacon, or Deli-Egg Bagels. Prices for bagels start at .70 each and can go up to $4.80 depending on the toppings and spreads My favorite is the Deli-Egg topping with scallion sprinkles on a whole wheat bagel , they have sandwiches and omelets available. Bistro-style seating is available outside and inside this Bodo’s dark, wooden interior gives you the feeling of being confined, and you can park in the parking lot or walk to the location. .There are two other locations in Charlottesville with ample parking if this flows.

Einstein Brothers Bagels has two locations on the University of Virginia campus, one located in Rice Hall and the other located in the campus library. Telephone: (800)224-3563.

The car is flowing so you will need to walk from one of the parking garages, but the walk is a good gastronomic treat to receive with one of the delicious food bags. Einstein Brothers Bagels are also baked fresh daily and come in multiple varieties such as Plain, Honey Whole Wheat, Plain, Pumpernickel, Asiago Cheese, Blueberry, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Raisin, Cinnamon Sugar, Cranberry, Garlic, Whole Wheat, Onion, Poppy, Capsicum and Sesame. Einstein Brothers also serves Egg Panini, Egg Wraps, Sandwich Wraps, Salad, Pizza Bagels and Bagel Hot Dogs. A variety of Coffees, Espressos and Lattes as well as Teas and Fruit Drinks are also available. My absolute favorite bagel here is the Whole Wheat Whole New York; The satiety of salmon and milk is heavenly. Prices for bagels vary depending on the type of bagel, filling and topping, but range from $.99 to $5.69.

Dunkin Donuts has three locations in Charlottesville, one on the corner near the Rotunda. , 1509 University Avenue. Telephone: (434) 984-9600.

Among the many things that make restaurants in the category of “bagel shop” is anathema to some “bagel shops”, but Dunkin Donuts has a variety at this location, including Sesame, Poppy, Cinnamon, Raisin, Everything, Allia. Multi-Grain, Salt, and Field as well as Bagel Torts in Various Flavors and Their Other Sandwiches, Wraps, Muffins, Doughnuts, Pastries and Hash Browns, as well as a variety of Coffees, Espressos, Teas and other Beverages. Prices vary depending on the type of bagel and toppings or fillings, but range from $1 to $6 in price. As in other areas of the Horn, parking is limited.

Starbucks has nine locations in Charlottesville, one of which is on the corner at 1601 University Avenue. Telephone: (434) 970-1058.

Starbucks is not known for their bags, but they are known for their coffee, which comes in a wide variety and is generally considered by many to be the equivalent of nectar from heaven. This place only has three varieties of bagels, Plain, Sesame, and Whole, and the bagels of the variety are set at $1.25 each. The bags are not terrible; it’s just that with so many choices of authentic New York-style bagels, I almost passed them by. If you just can’t pass up your Starbucks coffee, if the weather cooperates, you can have the best of both worlds, get your coffee from Starbucks and walk a few feet to Bodon’s Bagels and grab one of their bagels of homemade goodness. and enjoy outside at one of the bistro tables under the umbrellas.
