Chaos (2005) – a Movie Review

Chaos is more fun with Jason Statham, Ryan Phillippe, and Wesley Snipes. Jason Statham stars as Detective Quentin Conners. Ryan Phillippe is his rookie partner Shane Dekker. Conner and Dekker are hot on the trail of Lorenz, a skilled criminal played by Wesley Snipes. The two quickly realize that nothing is as it seems as they are surrounded by chaos. The movie is very fast paced with a “who did it” plot. Chaos is a great find and now at the top of my list of favorite movies starring Jason Statham. Warning: My review contains plot spoilers and if you want to watch Chaos, read no further because a major twist will reveal what was first seen on screen.

Chaos begins with an open sequence that reveals that two months ago, Conners was suspended for the release of the hostage situation and is suspected in the termination of the police investigation. Clips imply that the public pushed for the trial but that Conners and his partner were suspended by the police force. Back to the present day, Lorenz and four criminals are trying to rob a bank in broad daylight. They quickly besiege hostages and fortify themselves in the bank. Someone triggers the alarm and the place is quickly surrounded by cops. Lorenz was asked to deal only with the Conners. A police bigwig brings Conner out of suspension and puts him in a case with Dekker, his new partner. After two hours, the robbers blow up the robbers in front of the bank’s doors when the team was moving away. he allows the hostages to escape, the robbers mingle with the hostages.

Dekker is a very smart rookie and quickly puts together what Lorenz was trying to tell them about chaos theory Chaos, which is all It’s a decent bunch of random events. Conner and Dekker quickly investigate the identity of the robbers. They’re always late with Lorenz’s old associates and the only witnesses to the fact that Conner has been killed since the beginning of the movie. They find where the last three robbers go and when they move, the police fall into a trap and Conner is killed by a bomb.

Dekker just doesn’t give a damn after a call from Lorenz and finds Lorenz inside to help with the cop who keeps the stolen goods. A lot of cops seem to have thought that Connor and his partner got the raw end of the suspension deal, because in their opinion, their shooting from the beginning of the movie was pretty much directing and acting on duty. Connor Connor is never shown at the beginning of the movie and I thought he was only a small part but Lorenz turns out to be Connor’s partner Jason York. Dekker somehow tracks down York and kills him in a fight.

Just when you think the movie is over, it’s not. Dekker gets another bright thought and realizes Conner isn’t dead after all. She almost follows him to the airport and after an awkward phone conversation, Conner takes off with the money. Yeah!!!! Yep, I liked the bad guy. I really felt like Conner got a raw deal from the police force and basically the whole plot was to get them to let him down. And technically Connor only kills the bad guys so yeah he got his way.

I really enjoyed the movie. Connor orchestrating the whole thing was a big twist and I definitely didn’t see that coming. Ryan Phillipe was excellent as a rookie cop. He plays innocent yet well thought out. Stratham was hot as usual. Wesley Snipes has always played the same baddies, but oh well what can you do when you’re only ever given that one part. I will give the movie 5 out of 5 stars. The only downside is Jason never takes his shirt off. But that’s ok because I have the oil scene from Transporter embedded in my memory.
