Each year the dietitians at the Mayo Clinic receive hundreds of letters, emails and phone calls from all the websites on the internet that have Mayo Clinic diet articles on them. Not so unusual, but these sites offer diets that are not at all similar to the original Mayo Clinic diet.

These sites promise for weight loss by eating a limited selection of foods, all under the name of Mayo. I’m sorry. This diet has not been verified by the Mayo Clinic. Dietitians at the Mayo Clinic say these “mythical” versions of the Mayo Clinic diet have been around since the 1940s.

One version of the Mayo Clinic diet is the idea that grapefruit has the power to burn fat. Therefore, while eating foods high in protein and low in carbohydrates with grapefruit, you will lose weight. Grapefruit is supposed to burn fat.

Health experts say that there is no drug in grapefruit that adds to the ability to burn fat. Experts also say that low carb food is not healthy for long periods of time. You can lose some weight but it will only take time.

The original Mayo Clinic diet is more like a healthy approach to life than an actual diet.

This Mayo Clinic diet promotes total body health. In other words, not only do you take the time to eat the right foods to lose weight, you also need to exercise and set positive goals for your new lifestyle.

Some suggestions to help you get started with your Mayo Clinic diet are listed below. Let it be your food;
* Wheat carbohydrates
* Lean proteins such as vegetables, fish and low fat dairy products
* Fresh fruits and vegetables
* Canned fruit can be consumed in water or juice and are well-encouraged
