I have always loved something antique or vintage, so when I decided to marry my boyfriend in 2006 the following year, I wanted new vintage rings – that I would not look like other weddings that were done at my age. . I won’t be surrounded by cookies.
After we managed to find a beautiful wedding ring on eBay (for a steal, I might add) it occurred to me to try the same approach to looking for a wedding dress. I wasn’t very keen on the types of dresses that I typically find in bridal shops, although I did have a couple. I thought I could live if I couldn’t find anything better, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that it just wasn’t me.
So I started looking on eBay and miraculously found my perfect dress: an original wedding gown from 1929. The gown was satin, sleeveless, with a short front skirt (falling a few inches below the knees) worn to barely .It had a hem with organic scallops of a double row, and a matching satin belt trimmed in the shape of a grape leaf in the front, decorated with rhinestones.
According to the measurements, the brand is suitable for the dress, but barely. It was perfect and I knew it, so I bid high and crossed my fingers and got it for about $1,000, more than some Wedding Dresses but less than others. I thought I was incredibly lucky to have found a unique wedding dress because I found a few more than “back-to-back dresses”.
Not only did I find a wedding dress, but I also cut the whole theme for my wedding. — and the subject of a blog that would be (and still is) incredibly popular. Apparently I’m not the only one who loves 1920s-themed wedding ideas! - Check the measurements. This is so big! If the seller does not provide measurements or a size chart, ask. Measure yourself and be honest! There is nothing more frustrating than finding the perfect wedding dress and not being able to design it.
- Take as many pictures as you can. Especially if the garment is vintage, antique or used, pictures are worth a thousand words. If the seller has not posted the most, ask for more! I also ask for individual photos of any defects. You don’t want to be disappointed if you don’t expect something quite how you expect it!
- I found a good tailor to change. Most women have their wedding dress altered to improve. fit, so a good seamstress is worth her weight in gold. For my habit, I found someone who knew how to work with vintage fabric, since it can be a bit of a steal. Make sure there are no unpleasant surprises, get word-of-mouth recommendations from happy clients, or ask to see examples of current or previous work.
