My Top 10 Ales List

There are many types of wings. I have committed a list of ten wings to my head. seasons both winter and summer, I added blondes, Scotch, brown and altbier. I used personal taste in coming up with this list to include beer I was familiar with such as Troegs, Samuel Smith Fordham Brewing, Anchor Brewing, Castle and Samuel Adams. I also used the US Open Beer Championships, Beer Advocate and Rate Bersabee for which I was not. Enjoy and I hope you enjoy.

Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery Pale Ale took 3rd place at the 2009 United States Open Beer Championship in the English Pale Ale category. My experience tells me that Samuel Smith is one of my favorite breweries. Old Brewery’s Pale Ale is described as having a taste that “captures the soul of beer.

Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale is Samuel Smith’s holiday beer. Winter Welcome Ale is a beer to give the drinker some warmth. 6% alcohol by volume is sure to help. “A honey amber color, an ivory head with small bubbles, a floral aroma and a delicious malt flavor with a great finish,” describes the taste of Welcome Winter Ale.

Twilight Ale by Oregon Deschutes Brewing in Oregon won as Best Blonde Ale at the 2009 United States Open Beer Sponsorship . Twilight Ale is an annual beer only available June through September. Beer has 5% alcohol by volume. The brewers describe it as “Twilight Ale is a lighter, but full-flavored beer with a malty malt profile and a harmony of four hops.”

Robert The Bruce Scottish Ale, brewed by Indiana’s Three Floyds Brewery finished 4th in the 2009 United States Open Beer Championship in Category Scottish Ale. Robert The Bruce has 6.5% alcohol by volume. This beer is only distributed in Indiana and Illinois, but due to the success of the Three Floyds beer it is the most preferred in competitions. Robert The Bruce has “a well-rounded character with toasted malt and caramel notes.”

Samuel Adams Alea Summer took first place in the 2009 United States Open Beer Championship in the American Wheat Beer will indicate The beer is a popular art brewing company called Samuel Adams in Boston. This seasonal beer is blended with passionfruit lemon, grains of paradise and wheat malt to give it a unique taste. I find dry mouth after sipping.

Anchora Summer Beer second Samuel Adams Summer Ale at the 2009 United States Open Beer Championships in the American Wheat Beer category. In San Francisco he describes mixed beer as “the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character. But they also seek for their beer to be lighter, to say refreshing, in the hot weather.’ The beer has 4.6% alcohol by volume and is available from April through November.

My favorite brown ale is Newcastle Brown Ale from Scotland. This beer finished 9th in the United States Open Beer Championship in the brown ale category. The beer has 4.7% alcohol by volume. It is brown in color. It is dark beer.

Troegs Rugged Trail Ale finished 5th in the 2009 United States Open Beer Championship in the brown ale category. The beer is brewed in Harrisburg, Tarentum. Rough Trail Ale has 4.4% alcohol by volume. Aspera Trail Nut Brown Ale is copper colored with a velvety smooth flavor and a subtle subtle note.The beer is one of my favorite browns. mixed ales from one of my favorite breweries.

Troegi also brews a winter beer called The Mad ElfHoliday Ale which is brewed in November and December. This ruby, red beer is powerful stuff with 11% alcohol by volume, that’s like drinking two beers. “The combination of Cherries, Honey and Chocolate Malts delivers sweet fruit and subtle spices.” Great holiday beer to warm the spirit.

Fordham Brewery in Delaware will be pouring Copperhead Ale. Copperhead Ale is their version of an Altbier (German Pale Ale). It has 4.7% alcohol by volume. “Copperhead has made a significant leap to be known for its signature balanced flavor of beer,” is how he describes the brewers. This is Fordham Brewery’s top beer and that’s a lot considering the quality of their malts.
