Dolly Madison Zingers Are a Delicious Snack that Remind Me of My Youth

Along with Hostess Ding-Dongs, Devil Dogs and Ho-Hos, as well as Bomb-Pops and Twinkies, Zingers are the food I remember from my youth. As they grew older, I noticed that Zingers seemed to be disappearing from market shelves for a while, and I had to console myself with the next best thing: jelly rolls.

Recently, I started seeing different brands of Zingers available for purchase again. Feeling nostalgic (and hungry) I decided to sample Dolly Madison Zingers, and was pleasantly surprised that the taste rivaled the Zingers I enjoyed in my youth. If you have a sweet tooth and love to make cupcakes, jelly cakes, or Twinkies, you’ll enjoy Dolly Madison Zingers.

What is Zinger?

I grew up in Hudson River Valley, New York, at a time when our nation was not as enlightened about things like drugs. and healthy or organic things. Yes, I admit, I have developed a taste for things like Zingers, even though I know they aren’t the prettiest of snacks.

A Zinger is a small, rectangular shaped cake, similar to the size of a Twinkie. A Dolly Madison Zinger is a white cake with cream filling. Each cake has a lot of tar, and is sprinkled with cocoa.

I remember Zingers being a little larger in diameter; and the Dolly Madison Zingers are quite a bit smaller than my girl’s Zingers. Each cake is individually wrapped and Dolly Madison Zingers are sold as a pack of 6 cakes.

Dolly Madison Zingers taste light and fluffy, and the cream is delicious and rich in flavors like vanilla filling and not too sweet. Blackberry coating tastes like berries, and there is plenty of crunchy coconut.

My only complaint about the Dolly Madison Zingers is the small portion; if you’re really hungry and in a pinch, you could eat two Dolly Madison Zingers (I find that one isn’t enough and two is too much, so I wish Dolly Madison made the portion a little bigger. )

In all fairness, Dolly Madison Zingers should be an occasional treat and not a staple of your diet. With 160 calories and 7 grams of fat per serving, it’s not a terrible choice, but Dolly Madison Zingers have artificial flavors and preservatives. I love that the calories and fat per serving are reasonable, so you can enjoy a cake now and then and still stick to your diet.

Dolly Madison Bakery has been around since 1937, and was named after bon vivant first lady Dolly Madison, who loved to serve “. It’s a name you can trust about snack foods, and I recommend you Dolly Madison Zingers if you are nostalgic for the yummy treats of your youth.

(Now that I’ve found Dolly Madison Zingers, I’ll have to track down some Count Chocolate and Boo Berry cereal!)
