In 2009 Life was an original TV biopic on the life of the powerful American woman artist Georgia O’Keeffe. The title of the movie simply bears the name of the artist. Recently this movie was released on DVD and while we were hunting for a rental. In my research I found that this movie was nominated for 3 Golden Globes and was aired on Lifetime in September 2009.
Georgia O’Keeffe stars Oscar winners Joan Allen as O’Keeffe and Jeremy Irons as her husband and photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Not only does Allen star in this movie, but he is also one of its producers. The film begins when O’Keeffe first meets and meets Stieglitz at his art boutique in New York. Stieglitz shows O’Keeffe’s work without her permission and soon convinces her to go ahead with the hanging. This is where the beginning of the work turns the relationship into a romance not without controversy.
The love between two artists has its twists, turns and tribulations which leads Georgia to take a trip to a friend’s home in New Mexico. This is where O’Keeffe found a renewed sense of inspiration and his own voice. Things were not found in New York. As many fans of O’Keeffe’s work know, New Mexico was a point in his life and the center of his fame. popular work After Stieglitz died O’Keeffe returned to New Mexico where it is said that over 130 works were produced. O’Keeffe died when she was 98 years old.
This film did an excellent job of showing some of the most famous pieces from the O’Keeffe collection. I think this film could have gone a little further in terms of its artistic creation. There are some obscure places that were just summarized in the monologue, but perhaps it leaves curiosity to do its own unknown research. I feel that if this was a bigger budget movie it would have filled those gaps. All in all, this movie was entertaining and educational well done. I will try my best not to let too much go into my records. Some things are not necessary in opening biographies. I want readers to see and review my films for themselves. Having said that, I would recommend if you’re a movie fan to give this one a look and see what you walk away with from this movie.
