The first step is to decide how wide and ling your floating shelves need to be.

Now, based on that measurement have 2X4’s cut out to this same length and width.

Tip: You may want to subtract an inch or two base don the fact that most MDF is an inch wide. You can have your long pieces cut out to size – 2 inches. For the side pieces you will want to have them cut out to size – the width of the 2X4. (By the way 2X4’s are not 2 inches wide!)

Now, you will need 2 long pieces and at least 2 end pieces to build smaller floating shelves. For longer floating shelves that are three feet long and more you will need to space extra 2X4’s in the frame about every foot or so.

Now, to built the floating shelf frame simple screw together your outer rectangle with the 2X4’s. You should pre drill the holes and then screw in wood screws.

Pre drill holes for the 2X4’s inside and drill them into place as well.

Now, measure the whole length and width.

Cut two pieces of MDF out to this size.

Lay one side in place and pre drill holes, then screw into place or simply use a nail gun. This will be the bottom.

Now, turn the floating shelf over to rest on its bottom.

Lay the top piece of MDF in place, but do not attach it yet.

Now, cut out two pieces of MDF that cove the sides of the floating shelf as they are at this moment.

Use a nail gun to attach them in place or screw as before.

Now, measure the whole front of the floating shelf and have a piece of MDF cut to this size and attach as before.

Now, remove the of the floating shelf that you have not attached yet.

Per drill holes through the back two by four to attach it to the wall.

Now, you need to be sure you are drilling into studs when hanging this heavy floating shelf. This is very much like hanging a kitchen cabinet!

Hang your floating shelf on the wall just like you would a kitchen cabinet.

Replace the top piece of MDF and nail gun into place.

Now, you can sand any rough areas or fill in with Spackle.

Prime out your floating shelf and let this dry. Paint the floating shelf and you are finished!

I told you learning how to build a custom fit floating shelve would be easy!
