When you look back at the careers of many of the top superstars in sports history, you can find many things in common. They indeed had a great talent, an incredible mortal to capture, and they had the ability to outthink all their adversaries. But as important as all of these attributes are, perhaps the most vital key to their individual success was those who helped them to achieve their results. These superstars have often worked in pairs, providing the one-two punch that made these two legendary, but impossible to shut down opposing teams. The historic games are filled with teams that have gone on to great success on the back of these two dynamics, and fans have been treated to incredible highlights of what they were watching these pairs perform. Here are, in my opinion, the greatest pairings of all time, two of the top 10 games of all time;
10 – Serena Williams and Venus Williams
Although tennis is thought of more as an individual sport, many of the greatest athletes have also performed in doubles tournaments with a partner. The Williams sisters have been playing with and against each other since they were children, and it shows. Both things on the court, the power and speed of the opponents overcoming, with twins in the games, beware! They seem to share a common mind, anticipating what the other is going to do, and giving them a great advantage over equal opponents already in front of them. True dynamic gubergren.
9 – Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison
Peyton Manning is the greatest passer in NFL history, but without a star receiver on the other end, even the best arm isn’t very good. Manning and Harrison have been decimating defenses for years, putting up staggering numbers along the way. Harrison set the record for receptions with 143 in 2002, and 109 TD passes since Manning arrived on the scene in 1998. Exciting to watch, and a worthy match to make the top 10 of the two games of all time.
8 – Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant
Sure, these two egomaniac stars hate each other, but over time it’s hard to argue that one is the most dominant duo of all time. Kobe’s electrifying play, court vision and shooting ability perfectly complemented Shaq’s dominant play under the basket. This lethal combo has left coaches and defenders equally at a loss as to who and how to cover these two superstars. They have since gone their separate ways, but together they decided to go on to win three NBA championships before Shaq.
7 – Bill Russell and Bob Cousy
This list of the top 10 doubles games of all time is liberally sprinkled with players, given that the game has spawned so many legendary pairings. The Boston Celtics had the most dominant run in the North American history winning 11 championships, including 8 in a row in the 1950s and 1960s . Unlike Kobe and Shaq though, who both went on to become superstars, they did it a little differently. Bob Cousy was the leading scorer, lighting up defenses around the league with his dynamic play, while Bill Russell provided the D, fiercely guarding the basket, draining shots and pulling down obscene numbers of rebounds.
6 – Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig
Forget McGwire and Canseco. Back in the day the Yankees had two of the greatest hitters ever throwing themselves up to the plate. Anyone who has ever picked up a baseball knows the names of these two legends. Ruth has 3 all-time career home runs with 714, and will surely be the all-time leader. a wide margin if he had played so many games before him. Gherig was no slouch himself, hitting 23 career grand slams (the most in MLB history) and finishing his Hall of Fame career with a .340 batting average.
5 – John Stockton and Charles Malone
Another basketball duo makes the top 10 of all-time basketball duos. This deadly Utah combo completely disables the Jazz for many nights. Stockton, the NBA’s all-time leading man in assists, found a perfect match in the fall with Karl “The Mailman” Malone, who delivered every time Stockton got the ball in his hands. Malone finished his legendary career 2nd in all-time points, and although this dynamic duo never won a championship for Utah, neither can be argued as one of the best fights of all time.
4 – Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri
Hockey would have more representation on this list, except that hockey players usually work in threes, as in 3 members of each front line that they play on a regular basis. However, in Gretzky and Kurri, that 3 forward was usually nothing, often there only as a mercenary barbarian to protect Edmonton Oilers’ meal ticket. Most agree that Gretzky is the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of skates, and his career numbers certainly back up that claim, but without Kurri pulling the trigger on the end of Gretzky’s transition, the Big Numbers may have been a little more. human Kurri was a pure sniper, with tremendous hockey sense and an uncanny ability to find open goals. Truly one of the greatest superstars in NHL history.
3 – Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
With this list of the top 10 sports two of all time I honestly didn’t think it would be so basketball-centric. However, the two individual dynamics that I have listed deserve only the place that I have given. Magic and Kareem are considered by many to be two of the top 10 NBA players of all time at any position, and they both played together! With his legendary ability to create a pass, and Kareem’s near-impossibility to defend his signature skyhook, opposing teams could only watch these two with ill-concealed horror. These two Laker plays lead his team to 5 NBA championships, and Kareem is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.
2 – Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen
The third basketball duo in the top 5, these two are just a whisker away from my number 1 spot. The Bulls, like the Lakers and Celtics before them, were most dominant in basketball during Jordan and Pippen’s time with the club. This dynamic led the two bosses to 6 NBA championships, with Jordan, best game ever, leading, and Pippen in the giant shadow of his “Airness”, a superstar in his own right, working dutifully on both sides of the court with incredible skills. No one could stop this match at the top of the game, and there wouldn’t be many more nights.
1 – Joe Montana and Jerry Rice
Jerry Rice’s career was so great, and he excelled for so long, that he arguably could have appeared twice on this list of the last 10 games of all-time. But before he enjoyed fantastic success with Steve Young, he delighted Superbowl viewers by catching a pass from 49er legend, Joe Montana. Montana and Rice went together so well that Montana’s nickname should have been Red Beans. Always a dominant team, they have held their own in the biggest games, leaving spectators and opposing players in awe of their poise, and they have done it time and time again in the Superbowl, winning the big game twice together in legendary careers.
