As the community steps out to cheer on pilgrims past their lawns, this annual 10-kilometer foot race is truly fun and exciting for both beginners and seasoned veterans. Many professional athletes, such as Ryan Hall, Mo Trafeh (2012 Gold Medalist and Olympic course record holder with 28 minutes and 17 seconds), Deena Kastor (2004 Bronze Olympic Medalist), many high-profile runners enjoy the rolling hills of Northport; IL.
Here are some tips that will make your Cow Harbor 10K a unique Race event that you will want to return to every year.
Tip #1 – Find a 10K program to prepare for the miles needed to complete the course. Some include walking breaks. Others involve interval training. You’ll especially want to incorporate hill workouts. See advice #2
Tip #2 – Many people don’t notice the rolling hills that the site includes steep hills. The start of the race has a rise in elevation of 25 feet per half mile and a drop in elevation of 166 feet, making for a quick first mile. From there you ascend to the top of what some call “Widow’s Hill,” also known as James Street. However, what creeps out many novice runners is the gradual and daring incline of Water Ave, which has an ascent of 102 feet and over 1.5 miles. What has been written above, do not be carried out by a small mind! Don’t look for hilltops, focus 6-8 feet in front of you. Before you know it, you’ve conquered the mountains of Northport!
Tip #3 – If you live nearby, take advantage of the Northport Running Training Courses that offer a weekly race. They follow the same path. You can join a pace group that you are comfortable with. There is great camaraderie, and there are a few neighbors who give their time to work and serve people cups of water. So nice and curious. Note that the roads are open to traffic, so be sure to keep an mp3 player at home so you can focus on any traffic and instead listen to your body. Now if you’re unhappy with the luxury of running a regular budget. Do include exercise runs, such as running.
Tip #4 – Cross Training is something that will give your legs a break from the constant pounding on the floor. Many people keep in cardio and maintain their joints by swimming or biking. Others strengthen their muscles with P90X or Insanity.
Tip #5 – Park your vehicle at Northport High School, 154 Laurel Hill Road, which is one mile from the start, and take the bus to Laurel Hill Elementary. Also, there is no advantage in the front.
Tip #6 – Enjoy the scene as your chance to look to the left and see Long Island Sound a>. In addition, if you like the architecture of the house, you will see many Victorians and colonials.
Tip #7 – Look at the goal and smile at many photographers. Some sit on the stairs to get a great easy view of the main street. Others will end up in your face.
Tip #8 – For those who are of drinking age, refuel at the Beer station and enjoy the festivities; which include a bunch of different vendors publishing examples. Last year, Zico gave out small 4 oz bottles of Chocolate Coconut Water, Yummy! They are also different massage therapists prepared to rub and stretch sores. After the race organizers announce the winners and award the prize money, everyone collects gifts in different raffles. You are there to accept gifts, however, if you find someone who will wait and listen as the numbers of bibs fall out of the bucket, then enjoy the meal.
From time to time I will include new updates about the race at www.runwithnoah.com. Run well!
