Standing in st. Lewis, Missouri is a region known as the “Gateway to the West.” The arch is part of the Jefferson National Memorial. In 1947, a group of civic investors decided to hold a national competition for a design for part of the Jefferson Memorial National Expansion. Eero Saarinen won with his design of the 590 foot Arch. Over the next fifteen years, the project was modified and developed. Saarinen never got around to completing the box. He died in 1961.
Actual construction began on February 12, 1963. It was completed on October 28, 1965. The arch was dedicated on May 25, 1968. The total cost was about 15 National Park. The park is now 100 acres. Directly under the Arch is the Jefferson Expansion Museum. The museum gives a lot of information about the construction of the arch as well as historical information about the Lewis and Clark expedition. .
When the Arc had its last peak in the last place in October of 1965, Baseball Hall of Fame< /a> radio Jack Buck has done both radio and television announcing. An American flag was placed at the top of the extreme section and was raised to the top and placed. Vice President Humphrey Humphrey and Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall were on hand for the dedication.
It is the longest national monument in America. The legs are 630 feet at the bottom.
