Unemployment Tips for Tennessee

The company where I worked for many years is closing the warehouse where I work part-time, so I had to take a fall course. As part of my preparation, I recently attended a conference on the benefits of discontinuance in Tennessee. I’ve been making notes and taking names, and I have some tips to share about unemployment in Tennessee.

Filing for unemployment in Tennessee

You must wait a week after you are officially unemployed to file for unemployment. There are three types of unemployment benefits in Tennessee right now:

1. Internet Filing– This is the fastest way to file for unemployment in Tennessee and the expert way to file for you. Go to http://state.tn.us/labor-wfd/ or http://www.tennessee.gov/labor-wfd

2. Telephone – Due to the high call volume in the vacation call centers, it is not recommended to use this method. However, the two phone numbers for filing in Tennessee are 615-253-0800 or 1/877-813-0950.

3. Paper clam– This is the slowest method when your letters make their way to the post office through the snail mail. In fact, I have looked through the papers I received from the Seminary, and I have no hesitation in providing an e-mail address.

4. Mass Claim Filing– Because of the high volume of people currently applying for unemployment, you may see on television where they do mass sales sessions for a period of time. You should check the availability of your local office to see if an office near you does this. At the Metro Center office in Nashville, Tennessee, they seem to do two sessions on Mondays and Thursdays at 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM, and one session on Fridays at 8:30 AM.

It takes about 2 1/2 weeks to get your first check after you file. Check your vacation, you will make double the normal amount for the first week of vacation before filing.

You should check in weekly by phone or online for certification to get your next vacation check. Again, because call centers stay so busy, Internet is recommended for weekly certification.

In addition to your unemployment check, you are also allowed to earn a minimum income, up to either $50 or 25% of your benefit. Check your local unemployment office for more details.

The severance, 401K, and vacation penalties you earned at your job don’t make up your retirement.

Your unemployment is taxable income at 10%. I would like to have this amount deducted from each job posting or do it in a lump sum at the end of the year.
