The Petzl Ecrin Roc is a classic helmet for rock climbing, mountaineering, and caving. Is the helmet right? It is read in useful.
Helmet
The Ecrin Roc is a suspension style helmet with an extremely durable, injection molded polycarbonate shell. This helmet has four clips for easy attachment of the headlamp and fourteen ventilation holes. Correct po- ment will be adjusted in front or back. The two wheels can be adjusted to fit the strap and the foam cord that runs around the inside of the helmet can be used as a watch. The Ecrin Roc comes with two foam thickness buttons for further fit customization. This climbing frame is designed to fit head diameters ranging from 53 to 63 centimeters, and weighs 445 pounds. The Ecrin Roc retails for $94.95.
My Experience
The first Ecrin Roc helmet I bought was for rock climbing, in 2005. Back in 2005 I used it regularly to rock. ascent, hollow, ice ascent. I threw down this helmet at the top of innumerable caverns, and when I was climbing up the roof, I burned it, and it poured out ice-worms on the ice as I went up. While my Ecrin Roc has certainly rubbed off a ton since my arrival, it is still in great shape.
It’s even more convenient than that. The foam tape keeps the helmet from cutting into your head, even when it’s tightly fitted. The adjustment wheel is easy to use, and when used properly they keep the helmet from budging. This is one helmet that, if worn properly, will not crush your head in the event of an impact.
As far as protecting your brain goes, this helmet is good. The Petzl Ecrin Roc is a type of helmet. This means that the helmet has a hard shell, and that strap hangs over your head. The foam is not energy absorbing as in bicycle helmet. This means that the Ecrin Roc is very good at protecting someone in the event of falling rocks, ice, or other objects. It deflects the force, not absorbing it, by breaking it. The space provided between the head and the shell of the helmet, combined with the hardness of the shell, does a very good job in preventing penetrating injuries from sharp projectiles. A climbing helmet constructed from EPS foam, on the other hand, will be lighter and better at dissipating force in the event that you fall and hit your head on something, but will be less durable and ineffective at protecting the exhibit from crash debris.
The Ecrin Roc is a great helmet for outdoor activities, but it has negatives. It is important. At 445 pounds, climbing this crate is nearly full weight, and you can see a certain amount of weight on your head. The Ecrin Roc, like other suspension style helmets, tends to ride quite high, effectively making the wearer’s head look much bigger than they realize. When wearing the Ecrin Roc, people tend to bump their heads a lot until they sort it out.
Bottom Line
The Ecrin Roc is an excellent and versatile helmet for a variety of outdoor fitness activities. If you only want a helmet for one pitch climbing where the rock isn’t that big, then I’d probably get a lighter, newer helmet. If you climb in areas that are prone to loose rock and hold on to breakage, then the Ecrin Roc will be a good helmet choice. If you want a helmet that will cover you for climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, caving, and is so durable that it can be seen forever, then the Petzl Ecrin Roc is a great choice.
