Top Ten Adult Swim Shows

With the rising trend in adult animated comedy, I compiled this list of shows that I feel worthy of being the ten best.

10. Tom Goes To the Mayor- While this show is so blatently odd, it’s reminiscent of a train wreck in the regard that you can’t help but watch it. Created by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, the plot of “Tom Goes To the Mayor” is simple. It is based upon Tom Peterson and his encounters with his city’s childish and irresponsible mayor. The Mayor tends to take community affair advice form Tom and manipulates into scenarios which embarass Tom. The show is based on an original web cartoon on timanderic.com. The show is no longer in production as it’s creators are working on a new project entitled ” Tim and Eric, Awesome Show! Great Job!”.

9. Squidbillies- Based on a family of inbred squids living in the mountains of Northern Georgia. The show is filled with redneck humor.

8. SeaLab 2021- The original version “SeaLab 2020” was originally aired in 1972, only the crew has been replaced for it’s newer counterpart with misfits. SeaLab 2021 has included voice talents from both Brett Buttelr and Erik Estrada. Nothing better than some deviants stuck in a submarine for humor.

7. Space Ghost Coast to Coast- Designed to be a spoof on late night talk shows featuring Space Ghost as the host. Space Ghost was taken from his self titled cartoon which aired originally in the 1960’s and the 1980’s. In SGC2C, Space Ghost encounters his enemies of the original series Moltar and Zorak.

6. Venture Bros.- A tribute to the Hanna Barbara series “Johnny Quest”, the Venture Bros. chronicles the lives of two dim witted teenagers, their super-scientist father, and their secret agent bodyguard. The show is also noted as a spoof of the Hardy Boys mystery novels.

5. Cowboy BeBop- Successful in both the U.S. as well as Japanese markets, Cowboy Bebop tells the story of 4 bounty hunters and their adventures in their ship the Bebop. Cowboy Bebop, although strongly influenced by American music, ( it’s action sequences is timed to music, and it’s episodes are referred to as “sessions”) was originally created by Sunrise prior to it’s being made into a film by Sony.

4. Morel Orel- Although this show is only 15 minutes long, I am a devout fan. Morel Orel is based on Orel, a young buy whoose love for life is compared only to his love of God. In his trying to understand the scriptures, Orel finds himself often reading too much into them or misinturperating them.

3. The Boondocks- Based from the comic strip by Aaron McGruder, the Boondocks was as controversial as it was acclaimed. The show had episodes dealing with current and longstanding news items including Martin Luther King Jr., and the R.Kelly sex scandal.

2. Aqua Teen Hunger Force- This gross out surreal comedy is based on 3 anthropomorphic fast food items including a shake, fries, and a meatball. Although only 15 minutes long, it is definitely one to watch. There is also an ATHF movie due out next month.

1. Family Guy- I know this is so cliche. Seth McFarlane’s hit animated series about the typical American family based Simpson’s style. Regardless of the dry New England humor and at times excessive show tunes, Family Guy is still my weakness when animation is concerned.
