Family Fun in Tacoma, WA: July 4th, 2009

If you live in Tacoma, Washington, or within a reasonable driving distance, you may want to plan on attending this Tacoma’s Freedom Fair on July 4th, 2009. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this city’s Freedom Fair held on the Ruston Way waterfront. With the beautiful backdrop of Commencement Bay, you and your family will be able to have wholesome, family fun with a variety of activities slated for kids of all ages.

The cost for Freedom Fair admission, through voluntary donation, is suggested $5 for adults ages 18 and up, and $1 for children under 18; $10 for families. Souvenir stickers and pins will be given out while supplies last to those making the suggested donation. These donations help to offset the costs incurred by the Tacoma Events Commission, a non-profit volunteer-driven organization, to put on this community-supported, friendly to family fun event.

There will be a marketplace with vendors selling wares and food from around-the-world, and lots of entertainment that will put a smile on most anyone’s face. Choose from many demonstrations, stand-up paddle board races, shows, and music, music, music!

For aviation enthusiasts, the Freedom Fair Air Show will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. over Commencement Bay.

There will be a Classic Car Show in Duke’s Chowder House parking lot from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Visit the Lost Boys Pirates Cove, and the Realm of Chivalry to take part in dancing, swordplay, and other fun. You can also learn about weaving, armor-making, jewelry, and many more crafts from yesteryear. You can cheer on your favorite swashbuckling pirates or the gallant knights as they defend their territories!

If live music is your passion, this is Tacoma’s major musical event of the season. You will find so many styles and performers from which to choose, you’ll have a difficult time making a decision! Outdoor, indoor, staged or in-the-sunshine, you’ll have your pick of country, rock, jazz, international, blues, pop, and Christian artists-many are local, many are new artists.

The food booths are a festival all by themselves! If international foods make your mouth water, choose from: Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, German, Greek, Peruvian, Polish, East African, and more. Then from the good ol’ USA: Hamburgers, hot dogs, curly fries, corn dogs, caramel apples, and other “fair foods.” Make sure you bring your appetite!

What would a 4th of July celebration be without fireworks? The fireworks display will be shown from 10:10 to 10:30 p.m. and synchronized to a soundtrack. Bring your radio and tune to Warm 106.9 FM, and KLAY AM 1180 to listen while you watch the colorful spectacle from high above Commencement Bay.

Remember that this event comes to you through the generosity of sponsors, and volunteers who give of their time to make sure that you have a safe and sane Fourth of July celebration.
