Three Dream Jobs that Really Aren’t Fabulous

Thinking about going to college and majoring in your dream job? You better watch out because your dream many not be all it’s cracked up to be. Don’t be surprised if your find yourself majoring in something that ends up being on America’s Top Ten Worst Jobs list. And you also shouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t go to college, but are still about to pursue a career that ends up on that list as well. It can happen to anyone, even you. Here’s a list of some jobs that seem dreamy, but really aren’t.

Model

You guessed it. This job landed on the top ten list of the worst jobs in America according to MSN. I bet you thought that many models were paid a staggering amount of cash to parade in underwear and the latest skirts and suits. Nope. A very small amount of people actually ends up doing that. Just last year on average, models made an hourly wage of $11.22. That’s only a little bit less than the federal minimum wage doubled. For this reason, a lot of models have other jobs like waiters. And there’s a lot of stress involved in modeling. Models have to practically jump through hoops to keeps themselves wafer thin and they have to go through numerous wardrobe changes in order to keep the fashion show crowds pleased. And what do they go through all of that for? Peanuts. Or in other words, 11.22 an hour.

Fashion Merchandiser

Many people have the dream of being a “buyer.” That’s a person who supposedly travels around the world networking with fashion notables, picks up stylish ideas for clothing and puts them in the store. Well, contrary to that perception of the buyer career, the career of a buyer or fashion merchandiser doesn’t lend itself to fiddling with clothing all day long. You will have to look at Excel spreadsheets and observe and analyze numbers. A lot of times, when you have come up with a clothing product, you are the one who is responsible if that product doesn’t do well.

Basically, being a fashion merchandiser is like running a business. And most people have an idea that business owners put a lot of work into their business. So that means no traveling to fashion shows all year long. People who work in this field also say that overall, the profession isn’t highly paid.

Screenplay writer

A lot of people dream of writing a million-dollar screenplay that captivates thousands of viewers and changes the movie industry as we know it. And it’s true, sitting down and coming up with interesting characters and riveting dialogue is certainly the way to go when it comes to reinventing the entertainment business. But to actually sit and write a hundred or more pages of cinema-worthy material can be dreadful even to those who absolutely love writing. And since you aren’t getting paid while you are doing all of that writing, you’re essentially making 0.00 per hour. For this and the above reasons, many people start, but do not finish their first screenplay. Writing a screenplay takes determination and patience. It also takes perseverance. And some people many not be ready to use all of those virtues while they work for nothing.

After a person writes a screenplay, he or she must contact a movie executive and sell that executive their idea of his or her dream movie. The executives might like the film and buy the rights from you or they might simply take your script and rewrite it. That means you neither get the amount of money nor recognition you had hoped for.
