What to Do If Your Apartment Has Mice!!

If you’re living in an apartment that has mice, it can be an awful experience. Just know that, unlike with cockroaches, having mice in your apartment doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re an unclean person. Oftentimes, if your apartment has mice it is because they are living within the building complex itself. Although there is not very much you can do about the fact that mice are in your building, it is possible to reclaim your apartment from these small rodents, should they find their way into your home.

How to tell if you’re living with mice

Mice are pretty discreet creatures. They’re nocturnal which means that they are most active at night. How you can tell whether or not if you have mice is if you start to notice small black droppings around your apartment, this is usually a good indicator that you have mice living with you. If you see one mouse in your apartment, assume that there are a lot more mice which you don’t see.

How to get rid of them

The most effective way to get rid of mice in your apartment is to cover up all of the open holes where the mice are gaining entry into your home as well as where they have spaces within your home where they can hide. This includes holes along the baseboards and corners of your home, behind the stove or sinks, or anywhere else where mice can possibly squeeze themselves through. You can get insulation from a home improvement store such as a Home Depot or Lowes. You can also use those aluminum sponge pads to plug holes such as the ones behind the stove or sink and use aluminum tape as well. Mice can’t eat through those types of materials which are metallic. If you use duct tape, a lot of times mice can still eat through it. Ask your maintenance person for assistance in plugging up the holes in your apartment to get rid of the mice.

Other tools you can use in helping to get rid of mice within your apartment include sticky pads. These are small pads with an adhesive coating on them that you put around the baseboards of your home and when the mice run over them they get stuck to them. Many people consider this method of exterminating mice very inhumane because the mouse actually dies from starvation using this way. Mousetraps are another old fashioned way to exterminate mice. If you’re interested in a more humane approach, you should try getting plastic cube traps. These traps are small rectangular plastic boxes that you bait with something such as peanut butter (mice love peanut butter.) When the mouse runs into the trap, they cannot get out of it and it gives you the opportunity to let them go free outside where they belong.
