Those with small bathrooms are often on the lookout for storage solutions that will look nice in the bathroom and offer plenty of places for storing toiletries. Many costly solutions, such as over-the-toilet racks and such are expensive and often can’t be accommodated by the small bathrooms.
One easy craft that will provide you with lots of storage space is a shower curtain with pockets. The pockets can be added in the amount you need and will give a unique look to the room. There are lots of different ways to create a curtain with pockets. Some will want to stitch the pockets in place; others will prefer to use fabric glue to affix the pockets.
You have many choices when it comes to creating the pocket curtain. Purchase one particular type of fabric and cut pockets from it to attach to the curtain. Or, cut pockets from old garments to use instead. The pockets don’t have to be all one size and shape, though. Cut some pockets long and square; cut other pockets short and pointed at the bottom.
Say you don’t stitch nor do you have the glue? Use velcro strips to attach the pockets instead. Some velcro types have the adhesive on one side, which can be affixed directly to the curtain, then adhesive on the other side, which can be attached to the back side of the pockets. This makes it easy to place the pockets where you want without stitching or waiting for glue to dry.
Keep in mind when making the pocket curtain that the weight from various products, hanging on the curtain, may have a tendency to tear the curtain around the curtain ring holes. To prevent this use metal eyelets to secure the holes and carry the weight.
Draw on the shower curtain with chalk so you’ll know where you want to place the pockets and so that you can see the overall pattern before making it permanent. After positioning as many pockets as you’d like onto the shower curtain, you can then begin to place your toiletries in the pockets.
The pockets don’t necessarily have to be on the outside of the curtain, either. Place them on both sides to hold things in and out of the shower. You can purchase two shower curtains of coordinating colors and/or patterns then use one to cut the pockets. That way, they don’t deteriorate or stay wet like cloth pockets.
If your shower is decorated with a plastic curtain as well as cloth curtains on the sides, you can position pockets only on the sides so that they’ll be hidden from view by the fabric curtains. Or, you can position the pockets only on the inside of the curtain to hold bath products you generally use often.
It’s not completely necessary to use regular pocket shapes. Cut one large piece of cloth, sew or otherwise attach it to the curtain, then section it off by stitching or gluing every few inches, down the length of the extra cloth piece.
For small bathrooms, the pocket shower curtain is ideal, since it allows much needed storage space in an area that every bathroom already has. There’s no need to make room for new furniture pieces, shelves, or baskets in an already-crowded room.
Try making a pocket shower curtain for your own small – or large – bathroom. You’ll love the convenience of having products right by the tub, the curtain is very easy to make, and it’s no big problem to make a new one when you’re ready, simply by removing the pockets to use for the new curtain.
