Decorate your dining room table, end tables and/or coffee table with inexpensive wine cork coasters. Personalize the wine cork coasters by adding a fabric backing that matches your decor. The fabric back changes the appearance of the coasters and make them reversible.
Things You’ll Need:
3 to 9 wine corks per coaster
Scrap fabric
1 ruler
1 pencil
Scissors
1 square of wax paper, 12-inches
Fray check
1 hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Instructions:
Step 1 – Arrange 3 to 9 wine corks to create the desired coaster size and shape. Wine corks are different sizes so play with them to create the size and shape coaster you desire. Make sure the sides and/or ends are touching one another. For example, place three wine corks next to each other so they are on a vertical axis. Place three more wine corks directly beneath the first. Another option is to place the wine corks on a horizontal axis rather than a vertical.
Step 2 – Measure the dimensions of the coaster. For example, a wine cork coaster made using the example above is between 2 1/4 to 3 inches. This depends on the size of the wine corks.
Step 3 – Measure, mark and cut a piece of fabric the same dimensions as the wine cork coaster. For the example above, the piece of fabric is cut to create a 2 1/4 to 3 inch square.
Step 4 – Cover a flat work surface with wax paper. Place the cut pieces of fabric on the wax paper. Squeeze a line of fray check along the outer 1/8-inch of fabric on each edge. Allow the fray check to dry completely before continuing. Note: Fray check is found in the sewing section at a fabric or hobby and craft store. The fray check is a clear liquid that prevents the fibers in a piece of fabric from separating. It creates a hem around the edge of a piece of fabric without sewing.
Step 5 – Hot glue the touching edges of each cork together to create the wine cork coaster. This includes the long edges of the corks and the ends. Squeeze a line of glue between the corks. Press the corks together firmly to attach. In the example above, the outer two wine corks in the first row are glued to the middle cork. Repeat the process for the bottom row. Squeeze a line of hot glue along the ends of the corks between the top and bottom row.
Step 6 – Flip the coaster over so the back side is facing you. Squeeze a line of hot glue down the center of each wine cork. Immediately center, place and press the cut fabric in place. Make sure the edges of the cut fabric line up with the edges of the coaster.
Tip: Turn labeled wine corks so the label is visible on one or opposite sides. Glue all touching edges together. Eliminate the fabric to create a wine cork coaster that sports the printed words on the wine corks.
