Wearing feathers in your hair, on earrings, rings, bracelets, a necklace or even a pin is fashionable. Throughout the ages feathers have always found their place in style. One example comes to mind, flappers or dresses and feathers in hair often held in place by headbands. Feathers have appeared in hats or in the not so distant past as adornments for drug paraphernalia, which were often prizes at carnivals. Making your own feather necklace, earrings or barrette enhancement is pretty simple. You’ll need artificial feathers, which can be purchased at arts & crafts stores or in the arts & crafts section of stores and ribbons.
To make a necklace, gather several feathers together and hold them evenly by the stems. You can apply the same technique for one, two, three feathers or any number of feathers that you want to wear. Tie the feathers together near the base around their stems in the center of a ribbon long enough to comfortably hang from your neck. Tie the ends of the ribbon together like a shoestring to wear.
Or you can tie the feathers around an existing necklace chain or slip the ribbon through a link or two in a chain and tie the feathers on. You can also slip the ribbon through a pendant enhancement or link, which attaches the pendant to the necklace.
The same technique can be done to attach feathers to a barrette. When you gather the feathers to initially tie them together by the stem, you can use several ribbons instead of one to dress the barrette up and make the barrette appear fuller. Before you tie the feathers to the barrette, make sure to drop the ribbon down a bit so it will hang. Tie the ribbon at the closed end of the barrette instead of where it opens or you can tie the ribbon in the center of the barrette. Fasten the barrette in your hair. If you prefer the feathers not to hang, shorten the length of the ribbon or you can glue feathers to a barrette absent a ribbon.
Apply the above to attach feathers to a pin, tying the ribbon in a position where it hangs by dropping it down to the desired position or tie the ribbon close to the pin. If you don’t have a pin, use a safety pin. Do the same for earrings except that when you attach the feathers to an earring, tie the ribbon behind the earring on the bar that will slide into your ear. It doesn’t matter whether the earring has a back to keep it in or not. You are tying the ribbon to the earring.
Repeat similar techniques for attaching feathers to a ring or bracelet. Attach the feathers to the bracelet or ring band by tying the ribbon in place. Keep in mind that feathers in any situation will hang somewhat if they are attached to a ribbon.
