Are you looking for a decorative way to display your table wines? Perhaps you have a friend or family member who is an aspiring wine connoisseur. Either way, you may want to consider making a homemade wine rack. Based on my experience, there are several ways to make this item, but one of the easiest ways is to use wood, molding, and lattice slats. Here’s how:
Supplies Needed
In order to complete this project, you will need a tape measure, four pieces of wood for the frame (3/4 inch x 6 inch x 20 inch), 24 pieces of lattice slats (1/2 inch x 1 1/8 inch x 25 inch), and eight pieces of corner guard trim (3/4 inch x ¾ inch x 21 inch). If you can’t find individual lattice slats, you can always opt to buy a ready-made lattice panel. You’ll also need a heavy duty staple gun, wood staples, finishing nails, a hammer and a jig saw. A bottle of wood glue is also handy to have on hand.
Build the Frame
Begin by grabbing the four ¾ inch x 6 inch x 20 inch pieces of wood, a hammer and nails. Then use those items to create a square frame. The frame is what will hold the lattice slats. The voids in the lattice grids are where the wine bottles will go.
Add the Lattice
Continue by measuring and cutting the lattice slats into sections that are long enough to create two identical grid patterns. Keep in mind that the voids in between the lattice slats will need to be large enough to accommodate a bottle of wine. As such, I’d suggest that you consider cutting eight pieces of lattice slats into 6 inch long sections and eight pieces of slates into 15 inch long sections. I’d also suggest cutting the remaining eight pieces of slats into 24 ½ inch sections.
Proceed by stapling one lattice grid to each side of your wine rack’s wooden frame. You’ll also want to staple each lattice intersection to help stabilize it further. Next, test the grid to make sure that it is capable of holding wine bottles. Once that is done, grab the corner guard trim. It is designed to cover the corner edges of the lattice slats thus giving your homemade wine rack a more polished appearance. With that said, keep going by measuring and cutting the corner guard trim into pieces and attaching them to the wine rack’s edges with finishing nails and wood glue.
Finishing Touches
When you are done building the wine rack, stain or paint it as desired. Personally, I’d suggest staining it with a color that matches your home’s existing woodwork and topping it off with a coat of clear varnish. After the paint or stain dries, your homemade wine rack will be ready for use.
