The PT 906 F4 Fairway Wood is a change in direction for Titleist. The 906 F4 is very a very forgiving wood with a lower profile than anything Titleist has ever produced. Having had the ability to hit a lot of their products this season, I was able to review all of their new stuff including their two new fairway woods. Check back for my review of the 906 F2!
The PT 906F4 is not your typical Titleist fairway wood. A nice clean head, shallow face angle with a bore through design. While the shallow head males this club a little less workable, it does launch the ball higher which is a very big deal for the average player trying to hit their fairway woods off the ground.
First, the research team at Titleist put a lot of time in finding out how some of their tour players contacted the ground at impact. They took all of this data and came up with the Multi-Relief Sole. This design allows for better contact from a number of turf conditions by keeping more of the club off the ground through impact. This helps players that play on tighter fairways as it helps them to pick the ball more cleanly off the turf, and helps to prevent them from hitting behind the ball and skipping into the back of it. From heavier and longer fairways this will help them by keeping the contact to the ground at a minimum and prevent the dreaded fat shot from a perfectly good lie in the short grass!
While I was testing this club I was able hit some very high shots. The club has a lower center of gravity with a square face angle and very neutral weighting. I was able to work the ball any way I wanted to, although not as much as its deeper faced brother, and the ball took off nice and high and seamed to hang in the air forever! The clean look of this club adds confidence even before you take your swing. Titleist has always done a good job at listening to not only what the better player wants in terms of playability, but looks as well.
The head is designed much like the driver with its bore-through look and face insert. The club is made up of a 431 stainless steel body with a very lightweight, yet very hard Carpenter 275 steel insert. This adds to the explosiveness of this club and also allows for more weight to be moved around for added playability.
Overall this is a great fairway wood. It will be much better used by the average player or those with slower club head speeds as this club is designed to launch high. I’ll review the new 906F2 fairway wood next as this is the club for the mid to high handicap player.
Give the Titleist 906F4 a try; you will be surprised at how far Titleist has come in its designs!
