It’s now the time of year to name the best movies of 2009, specifically the top romantic comedies of 2009. These are what I believe to be the top movies of 2009 in their genre. Let’s begin with number 10!
10. The Ugly Truth
Rated: R
This is definitely the most vulgar film on my list of the best romantic comedies of 2009. It is definitely more of a chick-flick for the fellows in your lives. The men get what they want: crude, sexual humor and Gerard Butler. While the women get what they want: Gerard Butler. The movie is filled with laughs, including some provided by the latest, greatest SNL player, Kristen Wiig who is a producer for the television channel that Katherine Heigl’s character works for. This film’s ending actually ended up surprising me, but I won’t ruin it for you!
9. Confessions of a Shopaholic
Rated: PG
I believe this to be one of the best romantic comedies of 2009 because of the fresh performance by Isla Fisher who stars in this film as Rebecca Bloomwood, a shopaholic journalist. Isla Fisher reminds me a bit of Amy Adams in this romantic comedy in which she stars alongside the charming and handsome, Hugh Dancy. It is, ultimately, a movie about a green scarf and loads of credit card debt, but it is sweet, simple, and light-hearted which makes it a top romantic comedy of 2009.
8. Bride Wars
Rated: PG
While this movie did not live up to my expectations, it still makes the list of best romantic comedies of 2009 because of its lead actresses. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway are brilliant as they play frenemies in this chick-flick. It’s almost as if you don’t know which bridezilla you are rooting for to achieve their ultimate goal: their wedding in June at the Plaza. In the end, it’s a cat fight and a tear-jerker that makes it a top romantic comedy of 2009.
7. He’s Just Not That Into You
Rated: PG-13
Another let down when it comes to such high expectations that come from an AMAZING cast, but still among the best romantic comedies of 2009. The main problem with this film is that it is three films, albeit good films, smashed into one. There are a lot of characters to keep up with, but it is fascinating to see how they all end up connecting to one another. There are some funny lines by Justin Long’s character, but not enough romance to push it further up on the list of top romantic comedies of 2009.
6. Management
Rated: R
Another Jennifer Aniston film comes in the top 10 list of best romantic comedies of 2009 with this zippy story of an art saleswoman who strikes the fancy of a hotel employee. Steve Zahn plays the rather endearing stalker who tracks Aniston’s character down to try and win her love. It’s a very up-beat film with a surprisingly, refreshing, supporting role played by Woody Harrelson.
5. Julie & Julia
Rated: PG-13
This is probably the least “romantic” of the best romantic comedies of 2009 on my list, but I think it is too good of a movie to leave off! The legendary Meryl Streep and the rising star, Amy Adams, team up for the second year in a row (they both earned Oscar nods for last year’s Doubt). Streep will surely win an Oscar for her portrayal of Julia Child in this top movie of 2009. It is based on the two true stories of Child, the famous chef, and Julie Powell, who is now the author of several memoirs. It is a perfect blend of sweet and salty that will leave you with a smile, and perhaps a tad hungry.
4. Away We Go
Rated: R
One of the best movies of the year in any genre, this movie stars two of my favorite actors of all time. Maya Rudolph finally gets the leading role she deserves and her hubby, Jim from the Office? Even though, it is difficult to see them as a couple, they seem more like siblings at times, this movie works. Maggie Gyllenhaal has a great, hilarious supporting role as a friend of the couple as well as Jeff Daniels who plays Krasinski’s character’s father. This movie will make you tear up, and even spit up your coke and that is why it is one of the top romantic comedies of 2009.
3. The Proposal
Rated: PG-13
Everything Sandra Bullock touches turns to gold, especially when it includes, the rising star, Ryan Reynolds, a brilliant scripts, and a hilarious Betty White. This romantic comedy was a box office smash and made me laugh from the very first five minutes. The plot is somewhat predictable and straight-forward, but there are a couple scenes that are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.
2. 500 Days of Summer
Rated: PG-13
I will watch anything with Zooey Deschanel in it. For that matter, I will watch anything with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it. This is a very eclectic, indie romantic comedy that is so fresh it will brighten your day. It is about a young man who falls head-over-heels for an odd girl who claims she’ll never settle down. Gordon-Levitt’s character does a musical number (literally) and then ends up with a broken heart, yet I still leave the theater feeling better than when I went in.
1. Up In The Air
Rated: R
This George Clooney hit was just recently released, so it may not have as many fans yet, but it is the best romantic comedy of 2009 by far. The story centers around a man who flies constantly from business to business firing people. It is being considered by many critics as the top movie of 2009. It has a unique tone, and a solid message, but with a questionable ending.
