It can be tough on your wallet when you live on a tight budget, and even tougher if you are a senior. Many seniors are forced back in to the work place after retirement due to circumstance. There are some seniors, though, who work part time because they just want to get out of the house.
Whatever the reason for a senior to re-enter the work place, their part time job, if they are active enough, doesn’t have to bore them to tears. Having the right part time job can make it a fun activity rather than an obligation. A part time job may even serve as a way to keep a senior active and involved in their community.
There are a lot of jobs out there that can function as a supplement for a senior’s income as well as being fun and rewarding. Below is a list of, according to several Philadelphia seniors, the top five part time jobs in for an active senior.
1.) Flower Delivery – If you are a senior who likes to be out doors and you don’t mind driving, than this just might be a great part time job for you. As a flower delivery person a senior can get out of the house with their part time job, but not spend all day sitting in an office. Also, as a flower delivery person, a senior gets to meet many new people while brightening their day. Lets face it, not many things bring a smile to a person’s face like receiving flowers, and as a senior delivery person, you are there to see it.
2.) Flea Market Sales – If you have some old junk or you know people who do, the flea market can be a great place to get rid of old things while making some money. With flea market sales you can be a senior can be his or her own boss, and set their own hours. Once a senior gets in to the flea market sales arena, they will learn the tricks that many veteran flea marketers use to gain new merchandise. As you learn when and where to look, you will be able to maintain your inventory at little or no cost to you. You can also earn your money with out sacrificing time with your family. Since most flea markets are on the weekends and they start very early in the morning, you get to put in your days work before most of your family even wakes up.
3.) Crossing Guard – This job offers seniors a little less flexibility when it comes to the day of the week that they work. However, it offers quite a bit of flexibility when it comes to the hours that they work during the day. A senior needs only to work while the children are coming to or going from school. During the hours in between the school time rush you are free to do what you please. A senior can work in the morning, go to lunch with friends, and then head back to their post for the afternoon shift. This position will require a bit of time in training before you can get your own bus stop or crossing area though.
4.) Catering – Now this job can offer a senior a load of flexibility. Seniors can work part time for a catering company offering to fill in when needed, or take a regular shift. Another option is that seniors can opt for is to tell their family and friends to recommend them as a small time caterer for family function type events. Young and busy mothers, or fathers, always need help preparing for a party, whether it is a kid’s birthday, a holiday or just a dinner party, seniors can make a little extra money helping to prepare larger meals. It is up to you whether you cook at your home and deliver, or you cook onsite at some ones home. Set your own hours or work for someone else; you set the menu or let your clients pick, the possibilities are endless.
5.) School Bus Driver – Seniors can enjoy the same benefits as crossing guards in this field, only a bus driver spends less time out side in the, sometimes inclement, weather. Similar to a crossing guard, you need only work during the pick up and drop off times from school. Also, just like a crossing guard, you will need to put in some training before you take over the wheel of a school bus.
