Top 5 Cat Breeds in America

Newsflash- cats come in breeds, too. And America has chosen their favorites. Move over, kitty of unknown origin, the purebred kitties are moving in, and bringing their top ranks with them.

Number 5 on the list of most popular breeds of cats (I just can’t get over how cats come in breeds- can’t anyone just have a barn cat for free like a normal person?) is the Abyssinian. I have no idea what an Abyssinian cat is, but apparently they have large ears and a tiny head, so it has a sphinx-like appearance to it. A friendly, playful cat, they love companionship from both humans and other cats.

Number 4 is the Siamese- a cat many of us are familiar with (think, “Lady and the Tramp” and that “we are Siamese if you please” song in it). This cat is well-known for it’s dark face and cream colored body, with dark legs and tail, and are said to be calm and very intelligent. All I know about them is they yowl- a lot. And they are very spoiled and love attention.

Number 3 is the Exotic cat. At first I thought this meant like a tiger, or leopard, but it’s actually a breed of cat. The Exotic is related to Persian cats, only short-haired, and are prone to respiratory issues (like a Bulldog or a Pug) due to their squished-up faces. But it is still known to be a sweet, loving cat, despite its health issues.

Number 2 is the Maine Coon. It’s a huge cat that takes almost 5 years to reach mental maturity, so people often think they are, ahem, “not intelligent”. Is it a coincidence that people compare this goofy huge cat to a dog-like personality then? (as a dog lover, I resent that). Out of all these cats, a Maine Coon just sounds the coolest, being a big dumb cat that acts like a dog. Have never seen one before, let alone heard of one, but even their meow sounds adorable- they rarely meow, it’s more like a chirp that is too tiny for their size! If I ever got a purebred cat, a Maine Coon would be my pick, as this good-natured goof is right up my alley. See pics of Maine Coon cats here: www.verismocat.com/htmscripts/lrgimg.htm

And now, to the number one cat breed in America: the Persian. Most known for their long silky hair and calm, loving disposition, they are an American favorite, and the cat has a baby doll face that people just love. They look like toys when they’re babies, they’re so cute! Don’t think this particular cat is cheap, though. This popular feline beauty will put you out at least $800! For a cat?! I wouldn’t pay that much for a dog! I’ve paid less for a car! I’ll stick to the kittens the kids drag home from school- those buggers are free.
