Top 5 Unforgettable Advertising Jingles from the 1970s

Have you ever had an advertising jingle stuck in your head? I know that I have. Some of them have been stuck in my mind for well over 20 years. Here’s a quick rundown on five from the 1970s that I just can’t forget:

Dr. Pepper

The Dr. Pepper, “I’m a Pepper, You’re a Pepper, Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too”, advertising jingle was a big hit between my friends and me. We would buy Dr. Pepper’s from the corner store and then try to re-enact the company’s commercial by dancing down the street and singing at the top of our lungs. Of course it didn’t hurt that a few of us had a crush on David Naughton at the time. Although we’ve all grown up and stopped crushing on Naughton, the lyrics still can’t help but float through my mind. They also continue to float around online should you be interested in listening to them for yourself.

Oscar Myer Wiener – Bologna

There are two Oscar Myer songs from the 1970s that I listened to as a child. I can still sing both of them, word for word, to this day. How sad is that? The first jingle advertised the company’s hot dogs and included the lyrics, “Oh I wish I were an Oscar Myer Wiener. The other jingle advertised its bologna. Sad to say, at the time, the bologna song also served as a teaching tool. Without it, I am not so sure that I would have ever been able to spell bologna before entering middle school.

Coca-Cola

Personally, I loved the 1970s Coca-Cola jingle, “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” and the corresponding “Hilltop” commercial. I may not remember all the lyrics, but if I close my eyes I can still envision parts of the commercial. Back then, it was fun to watch and listen too as well. Of course I don’t have to strain my brain too hard over remembering it all because the commercial still lives online.

Alka-Seltzer

Ah, Alka-Seltzer. I may have never used the stuff as a child, but I sure knew the product’s jingle by heart. It was written by Thomas W. Dawes, who passed away in 2007. There was just something entertaining about singing the, “plop, plop, fizz, fizz” line. It was also memorable enough to keep many people singing it verbatim years later.

Johnson & Johnson Band-Aid

As a child, I was stuck on the Johnson & Johnson Band-Aid commercial. It was written by Barry Manilow during his years as a jingle composer. Who would have thought that the guy who gave the world the lyrics, “I am stuck on a Band-Aid, ’cause Band-Aid’s stick on me”, would also end up give entertaining us with the song, “Mandy”. The commercial can also still be viewed online.

Slinky

I had a slinky when I was a child growing up in the 1970s. Maybe you did too. Like countless others from my generation, I also memorized the advertising jingle that went along with it. My siblings and I would sing it as we watched the slinky walk down the stairs. At this point, I am guessing that I will continue to remember the lyrics well into my golden years.
