Hostess’s Banana-Flavored Twinkies: A Brief History and Review

My co-worker was enjoying a tough day at work and I started talking about the struggles and frustrations of running around the house and trying to please everyone. After deciding what to make for lunch, she remembered to pick up a few of the kids’ lunches, so she decided to run to Wal-Mart to pick out some for her lunch. She mentioned that she could only find small bottles of Gatorade there and not at other grocery stores. She also said she had Banana Twinkies on sale – 2 boxes for $5 – and her kids really loved them.

Wait a moment! Banana wise Twinkies? I had not heard of them. How long have they been around, how did I lose them? I asked my assistant to grab the box for me while she was there.

While she was gone, I decided to look a little further, as this new flavor had emerged, except that I was aware of. I found that banana flavored Twinkies are not really a new idea from Hostess. According to local sources, Banana was the original flavor of Twinkies in the 1930s when the snack was first introduced. There was a war in WorldII when the banana shortage in the 1940s brought about the need for society. replace the banana filling with a vanilla flavored filling.

The year 2006 brought another rendition of the movie ‘Kong’ and when its DVD counterpart was released, it was limited edition banana crème Twinkie. The new set of Twinkies boxes also included a contest where one could travel to Universal Studios Hollywood or Florida. Although these light sponge delights in Banana flavor were intended as a limited edition, a 20 percent spike in Twinkie sales during the promotional period convinced Hostess to add their flavor permanently!

My co-worker returned from a lunch box of Banana Twinkies for me in tow. Tempting as it was, I stopped immediately, taking as many cups as I could. They were my sister’s favorites when we were young kids in school. Chocoholic that I am, I prefer Ding Dongs or Hostess cupcakes to the white line of swiggly Twinkies. However, I hadn’t had a Twinkie in years and was wondering if I would find the banana flavor more appealing than the vanilla.

Finally, I ran home that night, I couldn’t resist anymore. I tore open the box and took out one of the cookies. I took the olympus, but I didn’t get any banana scent. It doesn’t smell like much, no. He double-checked the box, it wasn’t too obvious in the design, but, yes, he said the banana was filled and there was a character stuck on the lid.

Moist cake bites into moist cake. And at first I did not taste the thing, but gradually I began to taste the essence of Musa. The second bite was revised. These were good, and I preferred them to regular vanilla. I have yet to taste one of the fried Twinkies, but given the chance, make my banana!
