Growing an Herb Garden in Houston, Texas

Growing an herb garden can be a lot of fun when you can actually use what you grow in cooking. Children also love herb gardens, watching the herbs grow and “harvesting”. The following herbs will do well in Houston, Texas gardens. I have tried to list herbs that can be used in more than one dish. Also, since I like to grow in containers, I noted which of these plants do well in container gardens. You can move the containers inside to prevent the cold from damaging them (thankfully, rare in Houston, Texas), or simply choose to grow a small herb garden inside on the windowsills.

Lemon Basilius. This herb grows best in full sun and is best sown in spring. It can also be chilled up to frozen temperature (but not below). Lemon basil is a wonderful spice to use for cooking fish, vegetables or chicken. This herb is also hard to kill, so if you’re a gardener like me, be sure to add this to your Houston, Texas herb garden. Lemon basil does best in a container.

Chives onion Onions are one of the best herbs to grow in your Houston, Texas herb garden because they have so many uses for cooking. There’s almost nothing you can’t taste with onions. sauces and dips. mashed potatoes and also add shrimp to the dish This herb grows best in part shade, and must be sown in spring. It does very well in containers.

Dill. I love dill because, like onions, it is a vegetable with so many uses when it comes to food. Sprinkle the chicken and fish, over the vegetables, in the seasonings and dip. This herb will do best in the Houston, Texas garden if you plant it in the fall and give it full sun. This other garden does well in containers, and as an added bonus it attracts butterflies!

Mexican Oregano. This garden can be sown in fall or spring, and can thrive in full or partial sun. Mexican oregano is stronger than regular oregano, and tastes great in chili, beans, and stew. This garden will also attract butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden, and it does well in containers too.

Thyme garden. This garden herb is perfect in soups and stews, and can also be used to flavor poultry and fish dishes. Plant this herb in a Houston, Texas garden in full sun, especially in the spring, although this herb does well with fall planting , too. Garden thyme is easy to grow, but must be protected from frost. This herb does well in containers.

This list is not all-inclusive – there are many more plants that will do well in your Houston, Texas garden. Decide which one you like best and experiment until you find your perfect garden!
