A Beginner’s Guide to the French Manicure

Simple yet classy, a French manicure is Easy Glamour. Even though the French manicure has been around for a long time, it is still the choice of many women today. To date there are many ways in which to achieve the French manicure as well as many color combinations. The only limit to your personal French manicure style is your own imagination.

Simply put a French manicure is a pale pink or light brown color on the entire nail. This light color is best if the polish is as sheer as possible with just a hint of color. This is followed by using white on only the tips of the nails.

Nail Preparation:

Begin by removing all old polish from your nails. When all polish has been removed, clean the nails. This is best done with a nailbrush, soap and water. After cleaning the nails thoroughly trim and file until all nails are the desired length and shape.

Lets Begin:

It is best to begin by covering the entire nail with a base coat. The base coat is generally a clear polish that protects the nail. After applying the base coat, apply a layer of the sheer polish on the entire nail. Many people only apply the sheer polish to the nail and not the tip. I personally prefer to cover the entire nail with the sheer polish as doing so prevents leaving a polish line when you are finished.

Tip Those Nails Freehand:

There are a few ways in which to tip the nails. The easiest in my opinion is freehand. This is done by dipping your brush into the white polish. Be sure to remove any excess from the brush to prevent running. Then with a steady hand brush the white from the curve of your nail bed to the tip of the nail.

Nail Guides:

If you prefer to use a nail guide, you simple place the guide along the curve of your nail and then paint the nail. Many prefer this as it prevents any smudges or drips. You will however need to be careful when applying and removing the guides as they could peel your sheer polish off when you remove them.

Nail Pencil:

A nail tipping pencil is a white pencil that looks similar to an eyeliner pencil. These pencils are made specifically for whitening the tip of the nail. Simply color the underside of your nail tip with the white pencil for a super simple French manicure tip.

Finishing Touches:

When your finished and are pleased with your work protect it by adding a clear top coat. This will not only protect your polish it will also help blend any little mishaps you may have missed. After the top coat you are finished unless you choose to embellish your handiwork with nail gems or nail art.

Make your Manicure Last Longer:

In order to make your manicure last longer it is helpful to apply a new coat of clear polish to the nails every couple of days. This will help prevent any chipping or pealing between manicures.

Variations:

There are many ways to add variety to the French Manicure. You do not have to be limited to the traditional sheer pink or brown. You can use any color your heart desires. Nail gems and nail art can enhance your manicure by adding your own personal flair.
