The state seal of Alabama “Heart of Dixie” is a map of the state showing all of its rivers. And along those rivers many tend to their State Parks. Since the holiday season is likely to be the first chance for an ailing economy, cabin camping in Alabama State Parks may be the answer for Alabamans who can’t own an RV and don’t want to occupy a camping tent.
11 Alabama’s 22 State Parks offer fully equipped modern and rustic cabins, cottages or chalets, available for less than or equivalent to you would like to pay for the hotel room. Huts, cottages and chalets with fireplaces, bathrooms, showers, heating and AC, full kitchens or kitchenettes, and picnic tables And grills outside. Most offer amenities such as irons and ironing boards, decor, linens, and coffee makers. The kitchens in all but one park are fully stocked with plates, pots and pans and flatware. Many offer satellite or cable TV networks, and DVD players. ResortState Parks have on-site restaurants and guest facilities, hotels and more upscale accommodations, and many in The park has a golf course.
1. CHEAHA RESON
Cheaha State Park is Alabama’s oldest operating state park. Located in North Alabama, (less than an hour from Talladega), Cheaha spans 2,799 acres across Clay and Cleburne counties. Talladega is surrounded by National Forest, Cheaha’s highest point in Alabama, 2,407 ft. a proper name from the Creek Indian word Chaha, that is, a high place.
Cheaha offers a selection of fully furnished cabins in four Bluff areas, camping, game (honey) and 4-capacity. Spectacular scenery can be seen from one of the two-person Bluff Side Cabins, on the lawns of Mount Cheaha West, four of which have open ceilings. “Camping Cabin” is also called “museum cabin” for its historically rustic atmosphere. 2. CHEWACLA
Chewacla State Park is located in Lee County, Central Alabama, about ten minutes from Auburn. Its proximity to Auburn University explains why Chewacla State Park has “football season rates!” Chewacla’s 696 acres include modern campgrounds, a 26-acre Lake Chewacla, tables, boat rentals, hiking trails, waterfalls and recently renovated cabins. Chewacla State Park’s six fully furnished 1930s stone cabins feature hardwood floors, and a stone fireplace. The cabin is handicap accessible. 3. DESOTO REFUGE STATE PARK
Located in DeKalb County (eight miles north of Fort Payne) DeSoto State Park is located on Lookout Mountain, covering 3,502 miles rocks, waterfalls, a river and a mountain looms. DeSoto State Park offers a campground, tennis court and a pool and a nature center with interpretive programs with live animals. 4. BAY STATE PARK
Located in southern Baldwin County (an hour from Pensacola), Gulf State Park abuts the Gulf of Mexico and spans 6,150 acres. The Gulf state’s Park beaches are home to many species of beaches, and alligators inhabit its lakes and wetlands. The 900-acre riverside lake park Shelby boasts an 18-hole course. Within walking distance of the course and 2 miles from the beach, there are 20 newly furnished cottages with one or two bedrooms and one or two bathrooms, and 11 cottages with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Four “forest cabins” are located in the pine and palmetto forest. “Lake” cabins and cabins are located on Shelby Lake and welcome fishing. 5. Joe WHEELER State Park Refuge
Joe Wheeler State Park is located near Rogersville in Lauderdale County, less than an hour from Huntsville. Lake and Wilson Lake Wheeler offer fishing, sailing, boating, and a marine park and 18 hole golf course. The Joe Wheeler State Park is fully equipped with log cabins in the woods and a brick pond at Lake Wheeler Dam on the south side of the Tennessee River. The cabins accommodate 4 to 15 people, and run from $65 to 170 per day. Ten two or three bedroom newly built Lakeside Cottages located at the entrance to First Creek. 6. LAKE GUNTERSVILLE REFUGE STATE PARK
Lake Guntersville State Park in Marshall County is located in the Tennessee Valley, about an hour from Huntsville. Overlooking the 69,000 acre Guntersville Reservoir, Lake Guntersville State Park’s 6,000 acres offer opportunities for hiking, swimming and boating, bass fishing, Eagle spotting and nature programs. Lake Guntersville State Park has 15 two-bedroom, well-equipped lakeside cabins nestled among the pine and hardwood forest near the banks of Guntersville Reservoir. Lakepoint Resort State Park is located near Eufaula in Barbour County, on the banks of Lake Eufaula, the “Bass Capital of the World.” The park offers fully equipped lakeside cabins and cabins as well as a modern campground, marina, and 18-hole course. The lake has 29 cabins on the forest floor, 15 two-bedroom cottages that sleep four, and seven four-bedroom doubles that sleep eight, as well as eight new upscale Lakeside Cottages. An extra plug-in for charging the boat batteries is also provided. Handicap accessible two- and four-bedroom units are available. 8. MOUNT SANO STATE PARK
Monte Sano State Park is located in Madison County, overlooking the city of Huntsville. Dubbed the “spectacle of Tennessee” upon its opening in 1938, the park offers 20 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of mountain biking, which has a stunning view of the river valley below. Monte Sano State Park The Mount Sano cabin has 14 fully furnished cabins, 11 of which are rustic stone cabins dating back to the 1930s, with stone fireplaces being built, the floor of wood and the screen of the porch. 9. OAK
Oak City Park is located on the banks of Tranquility Lake in Shelby County, about half an hour from Birmingham. Oak Mountain boasts 9,940 acres of hardwood and hardwood forests and holds the title of Alabama’s largest state park. Oak offers Mountain camping and hiking, golfing, swimming, boating and fishing, and a horse show farm and the ability to ride. The lake is home to shorebirds and wading birds, as well as migrating toads. Oak Mountain State Park’s ten two-bedroom cabins sleep 6, and boats, paddles and life preservers are also available. 10. ROLAND COOPER STATE ARIA
Located in Wilcox County (an hour below Selma), Roland Cooper State Park runs along the 236-acre Dannelly Reservoir. Roland Cooper boasts a nine-hole course with clubhouse and boating facilities. 11. CHAMBER
The Windy State of East Creek is located on the shores of Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County (seven miles from downtown Alexandria). Wind Creek is the largest state air force state in the entire continental United States, offering swimming, skiing; Rowing and rowing, and laughing fishing. Recently, Eagle has become a common site across its 1,445 acres. A new addition to Wind Creek State Park, seven campgrounds with back cabins are now open, with three more planned. These cabins are equipped with a microwave, sink, coffee maker, toaster and small refrigerator, but you need your own linens and utensils for cooking and eating.
