An Unusual Hobby: The Art of Cardboard Modeling

I have an unusual hobby. I build replicas or models out of cardboard. Finally, I make a cardboard model.

What are cardboard models? Cardboard models are replicas of things and objects that are made primarily from cardboard, paper or plastic card. They try to approach the likeness of the things from which they arose. Subjects ranged from simple paper cutouts, buildings, castles to ships and aircraft. They can come in pre-assembled colored patterns or the pattern can be built entirely from scratch.

For as long as I can remember, I have always built toys out of paper or cardboard. I have fond memories of telling stories to my classmates in my First Grade using cardboard cutouts of “Superman” that I drew. I was often afraid of the car crashes and explosions I saw on TV shows so I built cardboard cars that, in true form, burst into flames. I often watched science fiction watching TV like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers where I founded and space models I saw the constructions. The characters of the Japanese Soul were the source of the subjects for my models. When I first saw Return of the Jedi [watching the trilogy in reverse order], I built his team of stormtroopers, R2D2 and C3PO. I remember building large versions of the American Airwolf, Huey helicopter and Space Shuttle. Throughout my youth I built nearly a thousand models. All were eventually lost either gracefully as fires/explosions or ignominiously thrown away. When graduated high school I gave up this hobby. I thought it was only a part of my youth, and had no part in the life of a growing man.

Once in my late thirties, sick and out of work, I walked into my old online program. By chance I found myself on a website of paper models. I was amazed at the number of people and the amount of things they had. So I’m going to ask myself, “Can I still build models after all these years?” I got some glue and cardboard to find. I completed two models based on popular Japanese Anime robots within that week.

I wondered if there was any interest in interacting with my childhood hobbies. An amateur site at http://cardboardmodels.bravehost.com. The site provides information for those who want to know more about cardboard models and to see my simple models. Frequently asked questions about this love are:

What are the tools and materials? The main material used is cardboard or rigid paper. The type and thickness of the paper depends on the type, scale and structure of the model to be made. Larger models require thicker and stronger paper to support the weight. Cardboard is easily rounded and folded to construct complex structures. Commonly used tools are scissors, carpenters, glue, tape, scissors, rulers, triangles, paint, pencils and glue. Cutting, scoring, folding and gluing on paper forms a pattern.

Why bother with cardboard models? Cardboard models offer a different way to create a hobby. Incorporates engineering and geometric principles into well-designed and strong structures. Unlike the plastic models, the cardboard model is very cheap. Repairs while building can easily be done with modifications and combinations in the final look of the model.. One built from scratch is always unique and one of a kind. It does not require a large space to build or store.

Where can I learn and get cardboard models? There are a variety of books available that model cardboard and plastic card subjects. There are two titles available about paper and paper structures. Sites dedicated to selling such cardboard models also provide information.

Can I start building cardboard models right away? Yes. Even children can build cardboard models and actually do. Many elementary schools incorporate cardboard models into their subject art. If you can cut patterns, you can make cardboard rugs. The model does not need to be complex. A simple model is always the best way to start a cardboard sculpture. Learning a little basic geometry and engineering techniques can eventually lead to more complex models such as shipboards.

Where can I get free cardboard models? Paper and paper model sites often offer free downloadable models that you can print and build yourself. Colored cutout patterns that you can purchase online are also available. Liberal designers offer different types and versions of models.

Do cardboard models last? Cardboard models are very fragile and light due to their nature and construction. But with firm and strong planning it can be done right. As with any collection, a serious cardboard modeler and/or collector must invest time and money to protect their models from the effects of constant handling and weather. Sealed containers or display cases are often used.

What I once abandoned as a part of my childhood and just considered it now provides meaning and purpose. It was like coming full circle to what I once loved to do.
