This is the first in a series of articles on drug companies and fraud that spans clinical studies, advertising and sales. I went with Bayer because it has one of the worst company history. It goes back to the late 1800’s.

Heroin was actually first created in 1874 by a British chemist named Alder Wright working at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London. Wright has nothing to do with the formula.
This same formula was later reformulated by the chemist Felix Hoffman twenty years later. Felix Hoffman worked at Aktiengesellschaft Farbenfabriken (now Bayer) in Elberfeld, Germany. In the experiments to produce codeine, the accident created a new form of morphine, which is twice as addictive. which was heroin.

The AMA approved heroin in 1907 knowing it was addictive. Reports of addiction were noticed shortly after its introduction to the market in 1899. You have to wonder about the AMA’s ethics even then. At this point, thousands of people were addicted to heroin.
Creation of the product concept, Bayer Aspirin
Bayer’s most famous product, Aspirin, was released on the market a year after Heroin. Since 1899 Aspirin has been reported worldwide under the Bayer brand of acetylsalicylic acid. This was first derived from Willow bark in 1853 by Charles Grederic Gerhardt.
Bayer withdraws from the sale of heroin at the moment of legal time.
Bayer stopped selling heroin in 1913, fourteen years after introducing it to the market. About that time they saw the writing on the wall that the government had become illegal. In 1914, the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act made heroin and other drugs derived from opium illegal without a prescription. In 1924 heroin and morphine were banned from manufacture and sale.

IG Farben manufactured Zykon B gas which was used in the gas chambers to exterminate the Jews in Auschwitz and other extermination camps.
The Bayer company used slave labor in its factories attached to extermination camps.
During the war with Germany, IG Farben was split into several parts by its allies because of its involvement in Nazi war crimes.
Bayer executive, Fritz ter Meer, was sentenced to 7 years in prison at the Nuremberg War Tribunal. Later, after being released, he became head of Bayer’s healthcare in 1956.
Bayer receives extensive worldwide control.
After World War 11, Bayer things appeared separately.
In 1978, Bayer purchased Miles Laboratories including product lines such as Alka-Seltzer, One-A-Diy Vitamins, and Flintstone Vitamins. They eventually bought and renamed their business from Sterling Winthrop Labs.
Bayer sells contaminated blood plasma in the 1980s and gets away with it.
Around the late 1980’s Bayer sold contaminated blood plasma to AIDS hemophiliacs in Asia for over a year. They have already introduced a heated version of blood plasma to Europe and in the United in 1984. They obtained a certificate. by New York Times investigators, showed that they knowingly sold infected plasma so as not to lose any profit. Thousands of hemophiliacs are infected with HIV. Argentina sold thirty thousand units; 400,000 went to the further East; and hundreds of thousands went to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

In 1985, the director of the FDA, Dr. Harry Meyer helped Bayer to cover up this act. W. Meyer suggested that the problem should be “resolved in silence without the movement of Congress, the medical community and the public.”

This shows you how a drug company can be involved in death and fraud, yet will eventually emerge with power and money. His evil past is lost in history and memory except for the Jews whose families died in the Holocaust and hemophiliacs in Asia.
